they should of have SF2 in there . it made millions and millions of dollars .
I can't get the page to load up, but asthetically, I think that #1 is a toss up between Crystal Castles or Xevious. They're both geometrically unique and are stunners in the art department.
Battlezone is also a very visually pleasing, and highly functional, cabinet. Tron is something straight out of the movie and is an outright classic. Tempest has a pretty legendary design too.
I always liked the look of games like ABP, Toobin, Xybots, and Xenophone; very unique presentations.
Other nods to Gauntlet, Outrun, Quartet, Hang-On, and the Capcom Q-Sound cab.
I'm only counting traditional stand-ups though. God knows G-Loc 360 would win every award for outright coolest cabinet if it was included.
i cant get the page to work for some reason
Page is not working because this link is on the front page of Digg.
I often wondered how much a Discs of Tron cabinet weighed. I had one for a few years and it was quite heavy.
FRED
i liked this feature, very informative and a fun trip down memory lane. i agree with what they say for the most part, i dont really care about the ranks too much and have no idea how i would rank each, but those all are some of the fondest, and coolest arcade of yesteryear.
ok well maybe they shouldve had T2 the arcade game =P
Anyone have more info on F-114 (#17)? I don't see it in KLOV.
I played that Discs of Tron in an arcade in Cherry Hill, NJ once, it's absolutely crazy.
Err, no Darius? Q*Bert?
Nice list and I was pleased some of my favorite cabinets made the cut such as S.T.U.N. Runner, Paperboy, and Time Traveler. However why the hell pick Top Skater over Apline Racer? No mention of my all time favorite arcade game StarBlade? It has one of the most unique cabinets ever! Also missing are Air Combat / Air Combat 22 which are incredible experience games today as they were during their original release. What about the R-360? I was also suprised the full size Virtua Racing setups were overlooked. I mean they used freaking full size mock Formula 1 car bodies on hydraulics.
Last I was in Santa Cruz (few years ago) they had a perfect condition environmental Discs of TRON in the Casino Arcade at the Boardwalk, amazing experience as always. I spent most of my time playing Daytona USA, Space Duel and Tetris however.
Thanks for the link. I'm always glad when they mention the unique cabs of the pre-JAMMA period.
Kinda thought Spy Hunter would make the list...
I always thought the original US Dragon's Lair and Space Ace cabinets had a certain "imposing" presence to them in any 80's arcade.
They were sort of obelisk like with their tilted-back design ... and even if you didn't see what was going on on the screen due to people crowding around them you could usually hear what sounded amazing for the time ... people TALKING ... sound effects other than blips and beeps ... and the interesting tri-angled screen printed / fiberglass header art always stood out above the crowd and player like a beacon.
They could have shared a spot SOMEWHERE on the top 50.
"And the book says: 'We may be through with the past, but the past ain't through with us.'"
I think I remember Space Harrier where you would sit in a chair and the entire thing moved arround. I think Mach 3 had the same thing. That was a unique setup.
I'm just trying to keep from losing my mind!
the APB cabinet is just beautiful as is paperboy. i also liked the fire truck cabinet heh.
sf2 was an awesome game but a generic cabinet with graphics as usual. tmnt had a better more visually alluring control panel and layout on the cabinet.
I thought Virtua Racing should have been on there as well - that was freaking awesome back in the day.
