Default Rumor: Factor 5 working on new Kid Icarus for Wii (joystiq)

This would be sweet, if it turns out to be true.

Holy Crap!!! I pray that this is true. I've been waiting about 17 years for another Kid Icarus.

If this doesn't pan out then it damn well better be Turrican if not a new IP. I'll try not to get too invested in it until it's confirmed. I don't want to be the one responsible for jinxing it for us all.

Factor 5 is good at making Rogue Squadron games, but what else? When they tried making ground based levels in the latest Rogue Squadron, I thought it turned out pretty poor. Kid Icarus was mostly a platformer, despite the wings, so I have my reservations about how well this would turn out.

Amen and pass the salt. The world desperately needs a new Turrican game.

But lets have that on the PS3 or 360... Factor 5 doesn't seem to have a grasp on motion controls just yet.

Please, oh please don't make Kid Icarus a friggin first-person game...

With that said, where's Kid Icarus Zero Mission? Just to see the original have the Zero Mission/Bionic Commando/Rondo makeover would rule.

Actually, Factor 5 have been around for more than 20 years, and are mostly known for their kick-ass Turrican games on the Amiga. They were easily some of the best programmers in gaming then, and even today they are more than capable of pushing a system to its limits.

I highly recommend playing Super Turrican I and II on the SNES; both are excellent games, and the second installment is easily the most graphically impressive game on the system.

With that being said, I am also hoping that they're working on a new Turrican game (hopefully 2D!) for the Wii.

I'll bet no matter what Wii game Factor 5 makes it will hold it's own graphically (vs PS3/360). They had a mastery of the GC hardware back in 2001 and that should help them be able to create the most visually impressive Wii game yet (perhaps will remain in the top slots as RS2 did after the GC lifecycle). I'm dying to see their game. As long as the entire game isn't tied to motion control it should be fine... I hope.

As long as it's not a totally generic 3D 3rd personal collect-fest platformer. Do something interesting with it. The original is an interesting game.

I guess I forgot about Turrican. I never really played it much. When I made my comment I was thinking about the company's recent titles.

Didn't Manfred Trentz do the Turrican series?

Anyways, considering how poorly received Lair is, why would anyone be excited about Factor 5 doing Kid Icarus? What was the last game they did before that? And Kid Icarus is an ancient game which is damned near impossible, at least in the 30 minutes I tried it.

Factor 5 makes excellent games, usually. Recently they have had one above average, yet disappointing, GC game (Rogue Squadron 3) and one flaming turd (Lair). Konami made Nanobreaker, so should we ignore all Castlevania releases from now on? Or sharper yet, who gives a fuck about MGS4? Seems silly in that light now doesn't it? Even among the best developers in the industry, shit happens.

Why Kid Icarus? Well, I guess after going through the Lair money-pit they need a title with a high potential to sell extremely well with a relatively low dev cost (= profit). You could do much worse than a classic Nintendo property and original IP's usually cost more to produce and carry a higher retail failure rate. So it all pans out, logically and fiscally. After Retro doing Metroid so well, maybe Nintendo is completely fine with letting another studio take a whack at Kid Icarus. SSBB is going to be an advertising trojan horse for the game with Pit included in the line-up. Perhaps this has been in planning longer than we know.

You're also referring to old (ancient) games in a derogatory fashion and on a retrogaming board no less. I find that more strange than making a new Kid Icarus game, truth be told.

IIRC he did. There was an interview with him in an old German games mag, where they asked him why the game was called Turrican. He replied that he looked into a phone directory or something and saw the name Turricano, which appealed to him...
