what is the best and worst port of a snk / neo geo game to a home console? should they even bother porting these games on these consoles?

I'm drawing a blank for the 16 bit era (I remember most were adequate at best), but the one that has always stuck with me is Samurai Shodown III on the Playstation. Atrocious load times mixed with severely cut animation (I think some walk animations were 2 frames total) made for an extremely annoying experience. In my experience all of the Saturn ports, and then Dreamcast onward were near perfect...
Well, modern consoles can handle them, as seen with the various Neo Geo compilations already out for the PS2, as well as the upcoming ones. So they deserve ports nowadays.
The worst ports were done by SNK themselves. I can't really choose between The King of Fighters 94 (PS1) and Blades of Blood: Samurai Shodown III (PS1) because they were both just awful. Horrendous loading times, and severe animation cuts, not to mention they played poorly. As much as I'd like to blame Takara for one of their many SNES/Genesis Neo Geo ports, I feel that those two PS1 games were the biggest offenders.
Best port? I can't really compare, but most of the Neo Geo ports for the Saturn, Dreamcast, PS2/Xbox, and current gen consoles are emulated very well. Of course if you want to be technical, every Neo Geo AES release could be considered the best port since it was the same hardware as the arcade MVS cabinets.
The Samurai Showdown IV port I have on Saturn is horrendous for its slowdown and load times.

what? has everyone forgotten about the 3DO port of samurai shodown? :P it ran at a horrible framerate.

For the most part, i really enjoyed Takara's ports on the SNES. Especially World Heroes 2, which I used to have a blast playing with friends all the damn time. IIRC, Fatal Fury 2 Special was totally not worth a shit though, right? I don't believe I had that one, just Fatal Fury 2 (which rocked).

I can safely say I havn't played any bad ports on the Saturn or Dreamcast, not just saying this because I'm a sega fan, but it's true. Especially the Saturn, which handled pretty much all 2D games better than PS1, with the exception of a few.
Some things never die....Give me all your Sega belongings!!!
I agree with you. FF Special was a disappointing port (the control wasn't as good as FF2) and as you said, FF2 SNES rocks. WH2 was also a great port. It's amazing Takara was able to squeeze in all that they did.
On the Saturn side WH Perfect was an awesome port.
The worst? Probably Fatal Fury (SNES). It was so butchered and clunky.
I realize my initial post may have been a bit harsh towards Takara. I don't mean for it to sound like all the games they ported were shit, just that there were some real stinkers. The Genesis Samurai Shodown was great, and the SNES ports of King of the Monsters 2, World Heroes 2, Fatal Fury 2, and even Art of Fighting (still a terrible game no matter what though), were handled well. It's just, a lot of their Genesis ports were lacking (I.E. King of the Monsters 2 was only vs. fights like the first iteration). And there were a few stinker ports on the SNES too, like FF, FF Special, and Samurai Shodown.
For you Neo Geo owners out there, how do the virtual console ports compare? Good/Bad? So-so?
the ports for the Dreamcast were pretty much the best overall...the playstation 1/2 ports were bad...crappy framerate and the infamous JAGGIES!!!
the recent XB360 Arcade port of Metal Slug 3 is actually better than the original...HD!!!

I've not played the VC versions (don't have a Wii), but I do own a Neo Geo... Anyways, aren't the VC titles emulated, which would mean that they should technically be perfect? I guess what really matters is which version is emulated: AES/MVS or NGCD? If the latter, I'd rate them "so-so" for most games (due to the CD versions of the games missing frames because of less RAM).
In all honesty, I'd probably have the hardest time getting used to the controller layout, especially for fighting games. That, and the joystick would feel different, due to it not being a microswitch design.

Never been able to buy a neo geo so all I've played is ports. PS1 ports were garbage I played most of them (a friend of mine owned them and liked em) I played sam sho on genesis but can't remember how well it played. Saturn onward has been pretty good I'd say.
Genesis>SNES>PS1 far as worst go's.
At least snkp has been doing a "better job" with the emulation these days.
To some degree they get it right with some collections, but must up on others.
To me the best ports start here.
Saturn
DC
PS2
I'm just glad i own a (cmvs) these days i don't have to worry if the port is good or not.
