Default Whats the deal with nintendo???

Has anybody else noticed how nintendo is making classic games in to crapper games. Like the new Zelda game. It went from gooooood graphics(the way we liked it.) to a crappy anime style. Also, Metroid Prime. It was a sweet 2D side scroller. now its first person? What?!?!? They should have made it a GOOOD graphic 2D side scroller. Also, Super Mario Sunshine! THat game is more kiddy than Poke'mon! (Well, its always been kiddy), but this is more kiddy than ever.

These games better be fun to make up for the crappy new styles.

Is it the graphics that you have a problem with?

Because I think you'd be pleasantly surprised with the gameplay advances in both Zelda and Metroid Prime. I played a bit of both of these at E3 and they're VERY cool games. The graphics have undergone some serious mutations, of course - but graphics to me are just a tiny piece of the gaming experience. Ask anyone who still enjoys Super Breakout or Adventure.

I can't really speak to Mario Sunshine. Platform games were never my thing. I wasn't crazy about Super Mario Bros and I wouldn't be crazy about Sunshine either.

    Default Huh?

    Nope, hadn't noticed.

While Metroid Prime isn't my cup of tea (not by a longshot) I can still appreciate what they're doing with it. The graphics are nice, and they're not afraid to take it into a new direction. I'm not much for first person shooters, so I'll sit this one out until they make an "old school" Metroid title for the GC. And in the meantime, we still have Metroid Fusion for the GBA.

Have you played the Zelda game? Whether or not you like the style (and it's fine if you don't) the animation is nothing short of spectacular. Even Disney's nine old men would applaud the animation in the new Zelda game. It's that darn good.

As for Mario Sunshine, it's more of the same old Mario. Love it or hate it, they'll keep making them until we stop buying them. And I'm sure they'll still sell a couple of this title

Nintendo is still making quality games. Although I personally prefer some of their older stuff, I do enjoy seeing their new stuff. And the new stuff still has that "video game" look, which is always a good thing.

Now where's that new Donkey Kong GBA title?

I'm trying to reserve judgement till I actually play the finished games.
I don't really feel right in criticizing nintendo since they've had a few million copy selling games and seem to know what theyre doing, and I on the other hand have not at any time run a giant video game business.

The one good thing I noticed though looking at the covers for Super Mario Sunshine, Starfox, Metroid, and Zelda is that they all looked different. I dont just mean the covers either the style, gameplay, and atmosphere are all different which is quite refreshing in the current climate of release just another clone or sequel to sell more units. I actually am glad nintendo is willing to take a gamble and try and make something unique.

Yeah i guess your right. I shouldn't criticize them just because they changed the graphics style. (even though they shouldnt have.)

As far as I'm concerned, the more people complain about the game developer doing the wrong things with the game, the more I want to play it, because when there are complaints, people always come up with the same idea of how to change something. To me this means the game will be original, as the developers will go about with the ideas they want, making it fresher.

I'm definitely of the opinion that Nintendo should be applauded and not condemned for monkeying with it's franchises. It's a good way to keep things fresh even though the games are in the same universe with the same characters.

The biggest trap fellow gamers seem to fall into is closemindedness. Don't judge any game until you've played it. You'll be suprised more often than not I'd guess.

Graphics aren't everything with Nintendo's games. Sure they may look kiddy-ish, but deep down Nintendo is known for making games with deep involving gameplay and extras to keep players coming back.

I have to admit I'm a little puzzled. Why are some people complaining about Nintendo's "kiddie" image NOW, in 2003? Wasn't this a fanzine discussion a decade ago?

All this flack about Zelda's cel-animation style reminds me of all the Comic Book Guys of the world, trying to convince anyone who will hear that "graphic novels" (ahem) are high literature, not comics for kids. Please.

We, as adults, play videogames because as children, we played videogames. We fell in love with Adventure and Pac-Man and Mario and Zelda, and we continue to pony up with each new installment. What exactly do the Zelda critics expect from Miyamoto? Mario "Taxi Driver?"

BTW, I've played the new demos of Zelda, and I have to say, it looks spectacular. I can't wait.

    Default er...

calling metroid prime a FPS is like calling shenmue a fighting game. it's an action-based adventure that incorporates a first-person perspective. you FEEL like you ARE samus aran as you're playing, and why the haters out there can't grapple with that meaty fact is beyond me. everybody wants to escape into a perfect game world, and retro studios (under miyamoto's guidance) knocked themselves out (for what, 3 years?) creating just that. i was skeptical up unto the moment i stepped up to a controller at the nintendo booth at E3 last year, then it was clear as a bell. if you unfairly judge a game because you think it's going to not live up to your expectations- at least RENT IT and PLAY IT before you vomit bile all over it, PLEASE. everyone's entitled to an opinion, but it's experience that counts...

oh, and the new zelda ROCKS, as the kids say...ignore it, and you'll just be missing out on a great game, period.

Definitely true... the new Zelda does rock. And whilst I don't think it is quite as long or fulfilling as OoT, it still bests most other software out there. And the graphics are nothing short of superb. This is the best looking Zelda game ever and one of the best looking games ever released. A few times I really had to just stop playing and stare at the screen to take some things in, they looked that good

As for Metroid Prime, it isn't a FPS, it's a FPA (first person adventure). And my game of 2002...

    [Rant]

You know, Nintendo take this kind of flak everytime they release a new game, they always have. It's like people are so closed-minded or short sighted that they completely forget or disregard Nintendo's past accomplishments and work, in favor of critisizing and condemning them and their work simply because it's different.

Nintendo are doing (and have always done) what every game developer should do, they're advancing and developing their games and trying to push gaming forward rather than simply churning out identical clones of a previously successful game over and over again.

If nothing else, the flak they take for trying to innovate, is a good example of how people fear change.

For example look at the Zelda series. Nintendo have always tried to keep it fresh and innovative, and with every Zelda release they have taken the same flak.

Don't people get tired of being wrong?

Before Zelda 3 (A Link to the Past) was released, there were the same condemning remarks about it being different, the graphics were wrong, that it was too cute, that Nintendo had ruined the series, it was going to be terrible, blah, blah, blah.. but they were wrong. Suddenly, once people actually played the game all the condemnation and naysay dissappeared

Onto the N64, and people see the direction Nintendo are taking with Zelda: OoT.. and out come the naysayers. "eww it's in 3D", "the style is wrong, it's nothing like Zelda", "They've completely destroyed the series", blah, blah, blah. Lo and behold, the game comes out and suddenly it's great, it's perfect.. and all the condemnation and naysay dissappeares

Bowing down to the pressure from the fans, Nintendo keep the same style for the next Zelda game (MM).. but, despite their efforts to add something new to the gameplay, they promptly get flak for not being innovative

people condemn them if they try to innovate..
people condemn them if they don't..

They're damned if they do and they're damned if they don't >

SO, onto the latest Zelda game and Nintendo have done what they do best and have made an effort to create something special and advance the series.. and the naysayers are out in force with the same old complaints about graphics, style, ruining the series and Nintendo losing the plot. What a friggin' surprise huh?

The same happens with Mario, Metroid, DK and basically all of Nintendo's other series and every other game they release..

Basically unless you have the memory of a goldfish, you wouldn't be so quick to write them off.

There is nothing crappy about the new styles of the aforementioned games. If you're so hung up on the graphical style and only playing "mature" games which are deemed socially "cool" then go play something else. Feel free to miss out.

    [/Rant]

I think the graphics on Zelda and Metroid Prime are spot on and a natural progression for both series.

As jaded as I am right now against Nintendo (due to having my expectations crushed and feeling betrayed by the title Super Mario Sunshine), I agree-give them a chance. What's really worked in Nintendo's favor is creating games with universal appeal. While they continue to crank out sequel after sequel of their signature titles, they are not content with rehashing the style over and over like Capcom does with Mega Man (not that that's a bad thing for the blue bomber, just an example). They want to keep their titles fresh to a certain degree. But you won't know what you pass up because of the theme or graphics until you play it.

I've not played the new Zelda yet, but I know I'm going to give it a shot. I just picked up Metroid Prime which will hopefully rebuild my faith in the house that Mario built. If you love the past series, what's it hurt to give the game a shot?

Nintendo's never been afraid to try something different be it with a new console systme or new style and approched to one their francises or a new title.

I've never enjoyed a Zelda game yet, in fact the first few put me off of them (they were too hard for me) but the new Zelda is making me WANT to play the older ones. It looks amazing! I don't think the graphics are "kiddie" just because they are cell shaded. Bugs Bunny and tentacle porn are very different things but they are both animated. Doesn't make them both for kids.
The new style reminds me of Samurai Jack sort of, and it's a very interesting idea.

Anyone who is knocking on Zelda new style has not palyed it.

It is unvelievable. To date the most beautiful 3D game i have ever seen.
It honestly doesn't look like polygons, it looks like an animated cartoon.
And it is stilll very much Zelda. Go to a local gamestop and play the demo, choose the boss fight option, that should change your mind (god is that thing huge).

As for Metroid, all i can say is wow. Definatly one of the best games i played, transitioned into the 3D realm so well. I was even more impressed because while the game had story, it didn't have a super lot of it, and no dialog, which is what usually keeps me in, but the second i saw Ripley, man i knew i was hooked.

I applaude Nintendo for the originality. And heck, i liked Mario Sunshine, i wasn't long and it wasn't that new, but it had some parts that were pretty impresive. none of you can tell me that you breezed part all those bonus platforming levels on the first try.....
I am in fact the guy that made the Raisins prototype worth thousands less by dumping it. "D'oh!!"
