There was a BASIC game written for the Color Computer that had a snail in a maze that shot lasers. Danged if I can remember what it was called though.

Yep. Snails were amazingly common in all the Adventure Island games.

Let's see... I know Sonic CD has snails in it somewhere. I also have vague memories of a Super Mario Land 2 beta that replaced koopas with snails in the Tree Zone.

Little Nemo: The Dream Master - NES...I know it had snails in it, although I can't remember where.
