Default Wonder Boy in Monster World & Games like it

I have been hooked on Wonder Boy in Monster World all weekend, and now the fun is coming to a close as I am about to defeat the last boss. What I need to know is what other games are close to this in play style and graphics. This has been such a wonderful experience I want more like it. Any console will do, I just need to know what to look for.

    Thanks!

They were released on the PC Engine/Turbografx-16 and other systems as well.

Or try out the Adventure Island series on the NES/SNES. Super Adventure Island II got into the whole RPG-esce gameplay similar to Monster World.
<Evan_G> i keep my games in an inaccessable crate where i can't play them

Would this not fall under the "Metroidvania" banner?

Nice list of those at http://www.toastyfrog.com/toastywiki...s/Metroidvania .

I remember Shantae for the Game Boy Color being a decent Wonder Boy clone. Although it looks like even loose copies are going for 30 plus dollars on eBay nowadays. That said, you should look into Sega Ages 2500: Monster World Collection for the Japanese PS2 if you're able to run imports.

Get a Sega Master System and buy the ALEX KID IN MIRACLE WORLD game! Shoot,... Buy the whole Alex series, you will love them to hell!.... Also Marvel land & Gunstar Heroes for the Sega Genesis are something you might want to check out. I almost forgot, there's one Alex Kid game on the Genesis too. I hope this helps.

I'm surprised that no one mentioned Chiki Chiki Boys on the Genesis. It has a LOT in common with the Wonderboy games.

Also Viking Child for the Atari Lynx. Released as Prophecy I - The Viking Child on most other platforms. It is a solid Wonderboy clone as well.
If a god is willing to prevent evil, but not able, then he is not omnipotent. If he is able, but not willing, then he must be malevolent. If he is both willing and able, then why is there evil? If he is neither able or willing then why call him a god?

Not all of the Wonder Boy series is similar. Monster World IV is similar, as is The Dragon's Trap (aka Dragon's Curse on TG16). The original Wonder Boy is a straight platformer, and incidentally is the exact same game as the original Adventure Island (the Adventure Island sequels aren't related to the Wonder Boy sequels however). Monster Lair is more like the original. Wonder Boy in Monster Land is kind of halfway in between the two styles.

Someone mentioned Saiyuki World. It had a sequel, which was released for the NES as Whomp 'Em. Great game actually, even if it is a ripoff. I second Chiki Chiki Boys and Super Adventure Island II. Tomba! for Playstation is kind of along the same lines as well.

If you want to play a CD version of the game, the turbo grafx CD system has a game Dynastic Hero which is the same game as the one you have played, except it has CD sound and a bit more color to it. Same game, slight upgrades. You can download it on the virtual console.

Thanks so much, I just recently got a SMS and TG16. I will check out some of the Alex Kidd titles soon, and I know a local shop with a copy of Chiki Chiki Boys I will snag soon. To me this was what 16 bit gaming was about, it really made me happy and nostalgic without ever having played it in my past.

Thanks for all of the suggestions.

Already mentioned - Dynastic Hero. This is a direct equivalant of Wonder Boy in Monster World on the TurboGrafx Super CD-ROM / Turbo Duo (and Wii VC).

Also Wonderboy III: The Dragons Trap aka Monster World 2 on the Master System & GameGear, ported to the TurboGrafx-16 as Dragon's Curse. This game is not to be missed. Probably the best gameplay experience of the series.

Monster World IV on the Mega Drive and PS2 (Monster World Complete Collection) and Japanese Wii VC is also very good.
