    Default Genesis game won't work.

Recently I found myself a copy of Toejam & Earl ain Panic on Funkatron. I can't get it to work at all. I've tried every method of cleaning the cartridge that I know of. The best I've gotten is a PRODUCED BY OR UNDER LICENSE FROM SEGA screen. Any help?

The game might be dead or it might a serious bit of cleaining. If you pay for shipping I would be happy to clean it for you.

Heh, thanks for the offer. I'd imagine it's dead, but I was just seeing if anyone had some good advice on restoration. Any tips for "serious" cleaning? I've tried the standard QTips/Alcohol method, and the eraser method. Any suggestions?

if you havent already open the games case and apply those methods to the entire pcb its possibly theres something inside the cart causing a short, and now for a question of my own that initial black screen that comes up is that produced by the cart or the system because i find that dirty games often boot to that point and no further.
For lucky best wash, use Mr. Sparkle.

My understanding is that it was the system recognizing a game had been put into the cartridge slot, seeing as it only does it on model 2/3 Genesis consoles.

Yes, it does come from the console itself. Also, the model 1 does display the PRODUCED BY OR UNDER LICENSE FROM SEGA screen. The first release of the model 1, however, does not have this message, and I believe that these do not have the region lockout in them, IIRC.

Ahh, my bad. I just know my brother's model 1 didn't display them, and I've never done too much research into the matter.

open up the cart and inspect all the traces and solder points.. if any thing looks suspect, it might need rework. look for darkened spots on the traces.
otherwise it could actually be dead. i have a properly dead mortal kombat cart somewhere.

What do you mean by properly dead? As in, corrupted ROM or what?

properly dead as in definately not a physical problem with the board, and definately not any of the other components on the board. i have no way of testing the rom itself, but since everything leads back to it just fine theres not much left to blame. i have no way to actually test the rom.

doesnt mean yours is dead though.

Once in a while they're just fried. Probably static or a manufacturing defect. The fact that it displays the license screen and fails to boot is interesting - the system has to recognize the cart somewhat or that won't even show up. So, it's like it sees the cart, attempts to boot, and crashes when excuting corrupted code.
