Default Xbox 360 thinks Rock Band is a DVD... thoughts?

I just got my buddy a 360 and Rock Band. Unfortunately, every time he puts the disc in the system it thinks it's a DVD. If he takes it out and wipes it off then it works fine, but then the next time he boots it up it does the same exact thing. The only other game he has is Guitar Hero III and it works fine every time. The Rock Band disc has some very minor wear, but nothing that should really mess with the system that bad. Any thoughts? Is this an issue with the game, or the system?

And sorry if this has been asked before, I tried searching but the search engine is stupid. Seriously, what's up with that?

It's the system, I had this kind of problem earlier and it's the drive that is about to give in... he'll get this warning more frequently and then it will be awfully hard to finally get any game to boot... it was the problem of my 3rd or 4th Xbox.. I can't remember...

If it's still under warantee, he needs to send it back to Microsoft asap.

There's not just the RRoD out there... unfortunately.

Make sure to tell your friend to lie and claim that he got the RRoD as well as the drive not working. Otherwise, you have to pay(I had the same problem with my second 360).

I call that screen the "universal white screen of doom".

It means your 360 is about to get a visit from 3 red rings, or your drive is in the early stages of crapping out. Or one, caused by the other....

What it means is that the disc drive is about to die. Mine went through the same exact thing, until it stopped reading discs all together. Be happy that that XBox didn't gouge to death discs like mine did before it died.

Since hopefully the system is new, call 18004MYXBOX and put a service request on it. They'll send a coffin out for it and it'll go off to texas for repairs/refurb replacement. Otherwise you could try taking it back to the store you got it from and exchanging it.
Because it makes no attempt to be great, it is therefore extremely great.

I can confirm this as well, one of my 360's (a core model) died this way. Faulty DVD drive.

Ok, that's what I was afraid of. Thanks everybody for the answers.

Unfortunately this wasn't bought new, and it's warranty ended in January. It's possible that I can return it to the guy I bought it from, but I'm thinking of having him induce the RRoD instead. Kind of crappy, but it beats lying. Does that sound like a good idea?

    Default xbox 360 problems

Just out of curiousity, has anybody had any problems getting their XBOX fixed for free! I had the original white 360 and everything was fine until one day I am playing Tiger Woods with my girl and my screen went blank. I was receiving audio but no video. I unplugged it and plugged it back in and received the RRoD, I then unplugged it again and plugged it back in and I was sitll receiving the same problem. Audio, no video, but this time no RRoD, I called Microsoft on two seperate occasions and they both said unless I am seeing the RRoD, they would not cover it. I wound up bying the black model instead and giving my white one to a friend, who I told him he could get it fixed at Microsoft but they would probaly charge $100 or so. Has there been any problems with the Elite models? Just curious?
