Default Weird Final Fantasy 8 (Bootleg?)

Recently picked up a copy of Final Fantasy 8 and noticed one of the CD's looked like a burn. The top of the cd is silver and just has the disc number written on with sharpie. The bottom however is black like a regular ps1 disc. I know that you can buy cdr's with black bottoms but they usually look a little different than regular ps1 discs whereas this one does not. I thought for sure that it was just a burn, however the game seems to boot up and play just fine in an unmodded ps1 and ps2. Is there such a thing as a self booting ps1 disc? I know this is possible on a Dreamcast but have never heard of anyone doing it on a playstation.

    I've never heard of one.

Can you get a picture of the disc up somewhere so we can see it?

HK copies of PS1 games were always silver bottom. Very common back in the day - especially of "big" titles.

No idea how common they are now, but I've seen tons of silverbottom games.

Oh whoops, other way around. Proto ps1 games were always burned on regular CDRs and played on dev stations. Scan a picture of the top of the disk - any writing around the center?

Not possible unless he's playing this game on a modded or a proto system. If its a regular system it won't play protos.

I've got lots of PS Protos. None of them are on a black bottomed disc. I'm guessing that somehow the disc didn't get printed with any disc art on it and someone drew a #1 on there so they knew what disc it was supposed to be.
Because it makes no attempt to be great, it is therefore extremely great.

also very cool? i know at least in the coin collecting world that misprints and mistakes are worth a pretty penny (ahahaha get it pretty penny coin collecting...... yea..... anyway) id have to assume that a small print run of misprinted or non printed discs could be pretty valuable as well, if on the other hand this is something that was released in droves ie 100,000 discs missing disk art that maybe its not as cool. Any insight?

I've never heard of anything like that, really. The only misprinted anything I own is a vinyl copy of Rush's Exit Stage Left with an off center label, and I have no idea whether or not it's worth anything.

I'd have to agree with Poofta on this one. From what I've seen most misprints usually don't sell more than their regular counterparts. I'd say though, the older it gets the more valuable. Like everything else.

Well, what's different about the game itself?
