When I turn on my NES I sometimes get a purple screen. Is this the problem associated with the 72pin connector? If so or not, any idea on how to fix it?

If it is the 72 pin connector then you might just need to replace it. there plenty of places that sell them and have instructions on how to do it. when I put in a new pin connector in my NES it only took about 20 minutes.http://nintendorepairshop.com this site sells the connectors and has instructions on how to do it.

It's been a long time since I've done it, and I don't remember where I learned it from so I'll try to explain the best I can.
First you must take the NES apart to get to the 72 pin connector. Once there, detach it from the board. Take something small (I used a dozen tooth-picks) like toothpicks or a pocket knife and go under all of the pins and raise them. Be sure to grab a tooth-brush and clean all the pins with alcohol/windex or what ever you use to clean with. Be sure not to raise the pins too high, but you can just lower them if you do.
Google it and see if you can find a faq that has a step by step guide for it since I can't give you the best description. After you do this, the pins should make better contact with the cart and it'll be a little tough to get the cart in and out. I remember having to pull out a cart with pliers one time I tightened the pins so tight.
And of course, a disclaimer. Do this at your own risk. I accept no responsibility for any damage you do to yourself or your NES or 72 pin connector.

Just to make sure - the 72 pin adaptor is what the game plugs into, correct?

Yeah, that's correct.
In my experience having clean games (really clean... shiny metal clean) is more important, but opinions vary. A new connector won't hurt, though some say they wear out faster than the original. I find that a good cleaning of the connector is plenty good. I just posted my method the other day, and don't feel like looking it up. It is in the "Two Questions ..." thread a couple down from this one.
With the advent of the internet, we now have videos that show us how to do this. Atari 5200 has a good description, but videos do it more justice.
