I've noticed in quite a few reviews that I've read that a few people seem to prefer the original SNES title.
Seemed a little odd.

Robot, fight like a chicken!
Uh, isn't that in a sense a bit apples and oranges?
SNES KI was a very scaled down (but playable) copy of KI.
N64 KI:G was a bastardized version of KI:2, which I never personally liked as it was so different from the original.
I preferred both, but ive played the SNES one more. I didnt like the blurryness of the N64's sprites however theres nothing like MAME.mmmmmm.
The combo system was a little more rewarding for me in KI2 but, overall, I found the game play of the original to personally be more fun in KI. I was constantly at the arcades during the height of these games so I really didn't play them much at home. Both games are different enough in a number of ways that each have different pros and cons, but given the topic, I'd rather play the SNES KI as I enjoy the engine just a tad more.
I prefer the SNES game simply because my favorite character (Cinder) isn't in KI Gold.
I prefer KI: Gold mainly because I liked the combo system better, and the animation is a bit better than the SNES KI. I loved both of them though but I think just for the combos, I'll go with KI:G.
I hear you there. Having played it in the arcades so much, it's a little different for me to play at home, but I won't argue I would slightly rather play on an SNES controller than an N64 controller.
And I wouldn't worry about liking KI the best. I know legions of people who prefer other fighters over Street Fighter II. There's a group I know that prefer Ultimate MK3 over Street Fighter II and have you ever met someone who would rather play Mace: The Dark Age than Street Fighter?
KI Gold I played the heck out of it.
I've always thought Killer Instinct Gold on the N64 blew away Killer Instinct on the SNES. The grahpcs are much better, the music is much better, and the game is smoother and faster.

Yes, I'd rather play Mace: The Dark Age than Street Fighter. I'd rather play Street Fighter II than both of them though.

It's hard to prefer one over the other because they both play completely differently. KI Gold was the N64 port of KI2 but KI2 was different gameplay wise than KI. I Prefered KI over KI2 or Gold just due to gameplay mechanics. On that note. The SNES had no business trying to fit all of the stuff that KI had to offer in the arcades and even though there were many concessions, the gameplay was intact. Every combo in the arcade was in the SNES version and it's pretty amazing how much they were able to get across from the arcade to the SNES.
KI > SF > MvC2 > MK
What happened to all of the fun tricks you were able to do in fighting games back then. I used to love all of those glitches and secret things that you could do in those games back then.

Gold is where its at for me. Although I love both itterations, Gold justs seems more balanced. If I had a choice between the arcade cabs (KI, KI2), I would honestly want Killer Instinct more for the simple reason of being better at the original than I was its sequel.
I have Killer Instinct1 arcade pcb
I prefer the SNES version in a scavenger hunt. Much easier to find.
I have to go with the SNES KI because I was raised on it. It was the reason why I bought the Snes, and played the crap out of it. I compare KI on the Snes to Tekken 3 on the PS1. Both were considered a stretch for the system hardware, both were pulled off without sacrificing gameplay. While I like KI GOLD, I wasnt raised on it and it has zero nostalgia for me.
