    Default I finally did it...

After years of being so close...finding reasons to do it but always coming up with a valid reason not to...being broke...not being broke...telling myself emulation was good enough...etc.

    I

    finally

    bought

    a

    Neo-Geo.

I knew when I got the Supergun finished, I'd used up all my excuses. The big one being I can't afford the games. NG homecarts are mad expensive. So I got a 2 slot MVS.

All I can say is wow! It's been awhile since I've played Metal Slug on a Neo and I thought I could live with MAME. Nope. Maybe I'm just in the honeymoon period here, but it just looks better running on the real deal.

Well, I've probably just entered a downward financial spiral, but I'm glad I did it. Now, off to play some Pulstar!

No one who owns Pulstar can be considered poor.

I'll probably make a similar purchase someday, I think. How much did this cost you?

    Hell yeah! Congrats!

It takes a special person to shell out the $$ required for the home cart releases but not that you have a MVS setup, w00t for you!

So many awesome games you should check out! Like:
    Blazing Star
    Magical Drop 3
    Slug X
    KoF series
    Last Blade 2
Mark of the Wolves..... oh so many many to choose from

Good luck on keeping your pocketbook in line.

I don't know how much capt. paid for his, but I got Pulstar for 50 on MVS. Great game, but I like the full out weaponry and blasting shit in Blazing Star. Those 2 games are a good reason to find a way to play MVS instead of the homecart. Saves lots of money, and if you get shock boxes and print out inserts for em, you have pretty much everything except the manual. Someone even made custom inserts for the KoF games (except '02) and when all the games are lined up on the shelf it makes another picture.

I saw that and it looked pretty sweet. I wonder if this guy behind the shock boxes could be goaded into molding cases for SNES games or other cartridge types too.

Yeah, I got the board and 5 carts as a package. I've seen the MVS of Pulstar going for $35 recently on eBay. (Of course the seller is kind of known for selling bootleg MVS carts, so you're taking a risk.) That's why I went MVS though. I mean, could I have gotten a home system with Metal Slug and Pulstar for less than $3000?

Plus, I'm far from rich. I've been selling off a lot of stuff lately.

This is a probably a dumb question, but aren't the MVS carts for the arcade machines? I know about the Phantom-1 converter thingy that lets you play MVS games on an AES. Is the 2 cart thing you have a stand-alone system?

MVS on an AES is a big why bother?. Just buy an X-Box and MAME them and save yourself the money or at least get a Neo-Geo MVS cabby.

    Thats some ghetto neo-geo collecting

Actually it's illegal neo-geo collecting. Some of us actually like owning the actual carts, whether it be on MVS or AES, instead of a cdr labeled "teh romzzzzz"

Not tryin to start another war with you Raedon, just statin how I feel about the situation.

Anyhow, GAME ON, however you want to go about it.

How is playing the real carts on a real machine via an adapter more "ghetto" than playing the ROMS on a modded Xbox?

That's a rhetorical question, by the way.

And to answer your question, JeffD, MVS is the arcade version of the Neo-Geo. The 2 slot I have is an arcade board which I hooked up to my Supergun so I can play it on the TV. In other words, it won't do anything by itself, you gotta have a cab or Supergun to use it.

@Captain Wrong - How much did it cost and how long to build your Supergun? Do you know anyone that sells them for a good price?

Hey! Congrats man! I think you are going to love collecting for this system..well at least love the games..not always the prices! But, either way, great system. Lots of great fighters and shooters to choose from. My favorite type of games! If you can get Blazing Star, do it. I love that game!

By the way, you are right about the emulation aspect. I remember when I had my home system and about 60 games (all gone..cry) I ran the emulated Metal Slug X right next to the real Metal Slug X home cart to compare. The real one was more than obviously different...

My supergun cost about $140ish to build (including a pretty good 2 player controller) and took around 6-8 hours. MAS Systems and G.W. Trading both sell pre made ones for $300, including controllers. The thing about that is I've heard enough bad things about both of their 'guns, that I decided against them. There's also the Sigma like Achika has, but that's a pretty expensive gun ($450+).

Really, you'd be better off building your own. It's pretty simple, costs a lot less, and you can make it exactly the way you want it. You can read all about mine here: http://www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11347

@zektor...yeah, as good as emulation is, it tends to make the Neo look like a Genesis. It's been awhile since I've seen a Neo running anything other than Puzzle Bobble, so I'd forgotten how nice this system really is. Maybe some day they'll get it 100%, but for now, there's just no compairson.

Blazing Star is on my short list of carts I want, that's a pretty fun game. Hell, I even like most of the sports games on this system, and I'm not a sports fan. It's nice with the MVS that I can pick up most of the games for under $100.

Why did you let your home system go? Man, that sucks. If I had bought a home system the time I almost did, I'd never let it go, short of starving to death.

Yeah, if I had a NG I'd put it on a pedistal and worship it nightly, but I know there's no way I'd ever be able to afford the games I really want for the system (such as the Metal Slug Series) and what would be the point?

And sixth, and this kind of ties everything together, my favorite genre is shmups and not only would I have to get a JAMMA cabinet (which I have no room for) or SuperGun (which I can't really afford) to play most of the games I enjoy playing which never got ported to a console. I'd also have to spend a lot of time and a LOT of money tracking down arcade boards that were only released in limited quanties in Japan and everybody is after.

Emulation just makes more sence for me. Yeah, I miss the actual feel of the actual gear, the smell of the carts and whatnot and yeah, I get the "priacy" pangs of guilt (although I faithfully buy every retrocomp released) but for someone like me, it's the only way to go.

Personally, I want to get a phantom-1...I already have a neo home system, and I've got plans for arcade carts for the future, so this would just be a time saver. Plus I could play the wonderful Magical Drop 3 and Neo Bomberman.
