    What's the point of private auctions? To protect bidders identities? To protect them from whom? It would make more sense for it to say: Yeah I'm greedy and I'm a shill bidder please bid high so I can make it go really high hahaha.

    The only use I've seen for private auctions is:

    A. - Sex. Any adult item on ebay is private half the time

    B. - Money. HUGE ticket items are private so the winning bidders don't get spammed from media, other sellers, or just losers with a lot of free time on their hands.

    C. - Shill bidding.

    An example of B.? I got in the newspapers and a couple online articles for bidding a couple million dollars for a hockey team, Reserve wasn't met, what the hell? I just bid on a $33,000 book yesterday as well.
