Default Play PSP games on PS2

Is it possible? I want to play the SRW-A remake but I don't want to buy a PSP just to do it. They are basically the same hardware, right?

The CPU, I believe, is the same but, they run at different speeds. Like half throttle on the PSP. Whether playing the PSP games on a PS2 would have clock rate/timing issues or not I don't know, though, I suspect that they would. I think, if it were possible, I'd heard something about it by now. Which I haven't. Admittedly, it would be nice if it were possible. Hope I'm either wrong or something changes in the future.

Good question. Not possible right now. Also, the PSP is current hardware so we usually don't discuss bootlegging its games. Google "PSP hack forum" and I'm sure you'll find plenty-a-place for that.

The difference between the PSP and PS2's CPU is not the difference between a Game Gear and a Sega Master System (read:none) ... the obstacles in getting a PSP game to run on a PS2 are so impractical and insurmountable that I sincerely doubt that it would ever, ever happen.

If you want to play a PSP game on your TV, get a HD TV and a PSP Slim, and a set of component cables.

I dont really want PSP on my tv, I just want to be able to play -one- game.

I didn't mention bootlegging. I'm buying the game after all (if I can play it). I just don't want to buy a bad system as the PSP to play it.

"...a bad system as the PSP..."

    *sigh*

In order to quote-unquote "play" a PSP game on a PS2, one would have to build a functional PSP emulator for the PS2, and there aren't even any functional PSP emulators for high-end PC's right now.

Since console/portable emulation needs to run in a hardware environment that's exponentially AT LEAST (reasonable estimate) 2X to 10X more powerful than the device emulated ... even IF you considered the PSP and PS2 near-"equal" in terms of processing power ... the chances of somebody building a PSP emulator and getting it to run on a PS2 ... are slim and none.

Even if it COULD ever be done, it WON'T EVER be done.

Especially since there is absolutely no need for it. We can already play PSP games on a tv, so what's the point?

Now I'm curious: why do you view the PSP as a bad system?

Or you could just wait a tad bit longer for the few games you want to get a PS2 release. Heck Syphon Filter: Logans Shadow, Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters, GTA:VCS and GTA LCS all got PS2 releases. Give God of War and a few other titles a little more time and they'll get PS2 releases as well.
Because it makes no attempt to be great, it is therefore extremely great.

Dark Mirror got the PS2 release, not Logan's Shadow I wish more exclusives would make their way over, but at the same time I think they should follow the examples of LCS and VCS and sell them at a budget price ($20). Size Matters went for the $30 price point and when they brought Dark Mirror over, they expected people to shell out $40 for it. Yea, I'd love to pay 2x as much for the exact same game as on PSP (actually, wasn't the multiplayer trimmed down and such in the PS2 release?).

Bummer than LCS' framerate was so crappy (anyone that complained about the framerate in Killzone would go batshit insane trying to play LCS on PS2). Man, double bummer that they never ported LCS and VCS to PC as well...now that would have been cool. I always preferred to play GTA games on PC, especially once they went 3D. Gotta love the m+kb, smooth framerate, and higher resolution.

edit - Oh, and when Logan's Shadow gets a PS2 release, I'm fucking buying it as soon as it hits $20. Bundle Combat Ops on that sucker while you're at it. Hopefully it comes out soon.

The PS2 and the PSP processors aren't even in the same family. The "Emotion Engine" is a little bastard of a chip. Combining it on the same die as the graphics chip did nothing for it's disposition.

I think some PSP games potentially could run on the PS2, but not all. I think there are more differences than just processor speed. Even if you did need an emulator, most functions could be handled directly in hardware, I would imagine (wouldn't have to actually be emulated). But I dunno. Just my two cents.

The PSP and the PS2 both have similar MIPS processors (PSP's top clock speed is faster at 333 than PS2's 299) but the act of taking a game that's not built for the system and creating an emulator to run inside some type of shell inside an already slower machine ...

... sure, some intrepid hacker could probably build it ... but that doesn't mean it would be playable in any sense.

This is why we always see emulation happen with a much larger generational gap between machines.

Interesting. I thought they had under-clocked the PSP CPU for battery longevity. Since the games are obviously less polytastic and shiny-pretty (for the most part) than the PS2 I suppose that falls upon the GPU architecture. After considering it for a bit, I'm thinking that it will more than likely never come about. Maybe an emu will take care of that one game you're wanting to play sometime. *shrugs* Perhaps it's something we'll see tried in the future with the PS3?
