JVC X'EYE Question

I recently got an X'EYE at a local thrift. The cart side works fine but the cd side has problems. It seems to not be able to detect the cd. When turned on the JVC start up thing kicks in and says insert disc. Beyond a good cleaning any suggestions?

Mine had the same problem when I first got it, but mine just needed cleaning as there was gunk covering most of the insides. We have a technical forum, and I think you can find the answer there.

Hello there!
You could problably get more help with your JVC X'Eye system problem at the "Technical and Restoration" forum....
But it sounds like the open/cose switch in your X'Eye is not making full contact or it has gone bad.....I'll recommend to first open your system case and make sure that the plastic piece that touches the switch is aligned in the right place....
Or, in case that your switch happens to be faulty,the member: InsainDavid has put together a good full review and fix on this particular JVC X'Eye common problem at his site....Give it a look...

Yeah, I posted that link to ID's site.

With mine, I had to give it a good cleaning around the pinswitch, because it looked like caked battery grease was covering it, and most of the insides. If you are lucky, that is all that will be needed.

If you start the system with the lid open and then close the lid it should reset itself and change the spash screen message to "Checking the Disc". If this doesn't happen then the lid close pinswitch is more than likely having problems. My repair tutorial linked above (thanks RadiantSvgun) will give you some repair options. However before doing any of that you may want to simply short the switch to see if it gives you any different results before pulling and replacing it.

Thanks David. The pinswitch is intact and looks pretty good. I held it down put on a disc and it worked so I used a piece of duct tape as a temporary jumper. I did look at your repair guide. It seems to me that the problem is the cheap plunger off the lid.

It's possible the plunger is worn down which is preventing the pinswitch from being depressed totally. You may want to add a little material to the bottom or top of the plunger to make up the difference. I ended up putting a small sliver of eraser on the top of it to make up the tiny gap.

Hello everyone. Long story short....I have researched this topic of the X'Eye not reading disc's and for those who have concluded that their laser pickup is totally dead or too weak to function correctly here are your options (I am past the point of cleaning lenses and mirrors). Here ya go....save the next guy the hours spent looking up info:

Options:

1. Take CD pick-up optic assembly from Sega Saturn (Model with
round buttons).

I took one out of mine (model with round buttons) and verified that the
optic assembly was the same make and model. I then installed it in my
X'Eye and fired it up. I checked/tested it and it worked great. I then put
it back in the Saturn...and yup it still worked in that too. I can't confirm
that the other model Saturn has that same pick-up assembly. Can
anyone else verify that?

2. Take CD pick-up optic assembly from another X'Eye. I wouldn't do
this unless it's a junk unit used for parts with a working pick-up laser.

3. Purchase NEW CD pick-up optic assembly from an electronics
supply outlet online or locally. You will not want to wait to long...because
JVC has stopped producing them and when stores run out, they are gone
for good. I'm guessing this optic assembly works in more then 2 Sega
game systems. You all might want to stock up on them.

I found several stores online with various prices. Prices where from $23-
$70 plus shipping. I'm going with the $23 and $9 shipping on mine now
that I have verified that it was the pick-up laser from the temporary
swap from my Saturn. I paid $12 for my X'Eye knowing it maybe more
than a lid switch issue (which my switch checked/tested fine) and with
$32 for the new pick-up laser I'll have $44 invested in it. A price I'm
happy with. They go for a lot more than that if do your home work.
Although my so called $12 steal was not as good as I had thought,
I got one or soon will have one with a new laser....and that is probably
best in the long run.

I must say that the X'Eye is a very cool looking unit.....A nice addition to my collection of Sega and Nintendo game consoles.

JVC Opt-6 This is what is stamped on the optical pickup
JVC Optima-6 Internet research indicated this is the same as Opt-6
JVC Optima-6S This what you will need to buy. Most current model.
JVC Optima-150S Internet research indicated that is could be the replacement model for the Optima-6 S. This maybe a option if one can't find the other.
