    Default Mystery Genesis 2 unit

    Hello all.
Sorry on the image if it is too large as I am a novice in the ways of digital technology.

I found this unit last spring at a local Gwill.

    What is it?

the switch choices read "play game" and "trouble shooting screen".

I as well have a super 64 cartridge adapter... did not know these existed that allowed one to play SNES carts on a N64.

any and all info you all can share would be greatly appreciated.

    Peace!

hmm id say it's a mod, cept for the trouble shooting thing. Whyd anyone add that? Seen those switches for region but.... Weird. Doesn't look like a dev unit though

Based on what the switch options are, if I had to guess (since I don't know) I would say it was some sort of modification for a store kiosk or demo unit.

Have you played the system and used the different switch settings? If you have, what happened? That could also give a better idea of what this is.

Can you post a picture of the Super 64? I didn't know there was another non-Tristar adapter.

I can do that... I tried to get it to work today on my Pikachu 64 with some super famicom games i picked up last week (15 for $1 each)... and no luck.

It was in the pile with the games so i figured it was for that...

Any chance you fancy cracking that Genny 2 open so we can at least see where the wires from the switch go to? Easiest way to determine if it's just a region mod or something more exotic.

What happens if you boot it up with the switch set to 'trouble shooting screen'?

I tried "Vapor trail" on my Genny 3 first, all was well, plugged in the mystery Genny 2 with same cables and same TV same game, and no difference in game at all with switch on or off as game was in cut-scene intro or in game mode.

here is what it looks like inside... can't get the board off the black plastic base though to see under inferior RF shield.... any suggestions genesis gurus?

    Peace!

Here is a ~close up... figured out there were two screws on the cartridge mount holding through the boards to the black base.
removed those and here it is...

After reassembling the unit, and playing with it again, I cannot see any variation in the difference between switch up and switch down, yet there is a solder to the board suggesting something must happen.... no guesses out there?

i remember seeing mods like this quite often in the 90's, i'm pretty sure it was to go from Genesis to Mega Drive and back, after Sega redesigned it so you couldn't just cut away the cartridge slot's sides...

either that or it's the switch for the valet, you choose

    damn valet....

Um, that switch runs to the Player 2 controller port, that has nothing to do with a region mode switch. Possibly it has something to do with 3 button / 6 button controllers? A hardwired "mode" switch perhaps? If anything it's something more to look into, nothing to do with region however.

Guess i should have read the whole post rather than just commented on the pic...

But now that i have read everything... it would seem that it may have been used to test newly developed controllers, and maybe the switch told the system to display error codes if certain things didn't work right... that of course meaning that a special trouble shooting cartridge had to be plugged in...

    thats what i got...

Could also have to do with the four player adapters for the Genesis possibly, since there were compatiblity problems between the EA games, EA splitters, etc.

    Default McCain or Obama

So it might actually be something cool to have in my collection then...

I wonder if Sega was ever based here in the Puget Sound WA state region (memory tells me they were at one time)...

    Thanks!

    P.s.

as a gamer... who do you think would be more fun to play against in a head to head...
