I prefer the SNES version, if for no reason other than the controller.

    Exactly.

I finally picked up KI: Gold the other day, and now that I have a somewhat decent N64 Controller (Hori), maybe I'll have a different opinion.

SNES game, simply because KI Gold doesn't have Cinder.

Never played KI on N64, but as others alluded to, I cannot imagine playing a fighter with that horrendous N64 controller (JMO). At least, it certainly was not made with fighting games in mind.

SNES port was pretty amazing considering all they squeezed in and how limited they were by the system's limitations.

The SNES KI package bundle was the first SNES unit I owned. I play many a game on that version, and to me the best comparison I can say is that KI on the SNES was like Tekken 3 on the PS1. Both were amazing ports that kept all the great gameplay that made their arcade counterpart great. As comparing KI on SNES to KI on N64, the control and controller make me hands down lean to KI on the SNES, although that KI64 is one of the better fighters on the N64.

I might have to bust out KI on both systems and play a couple of rounds

As much as I hate the insta-kill moves the computer spams, I am going with KI Gold for N64.

The SNES KI was a great port, but still didn't have that umph that the arcade did. It just felt like another "me too" fighter to me.

The N64 game had its quirks and shortcomings, but it just felt more like the real KI to me. Plus I can't get enough of Orchid's level theme-song.

BTW, I don't know what happened to my SNES Killer Instinct cart, but I still have "Killer Kuts" lying around

Super Nintendo version, with its muted sound all the way.

    And this is why:

    a. N64 version had suck ass controller
    b. N64 version had all new perspectives...that the characters didn't move with...
    c. Slapping flat, pixelly CGs on N64 real polygons looked really odd.

I will give the N64 version for having more creative ways around the lack of FMV sequences, but as far as just toss in and play, SNES all the way.

I prefer KI Gold on N64.

I guess I'm one of a very select few, but I never had a problem using the N64 controller on fighting games. The GameCube controller with its horrible D-pad, however, is a different story.

They both are decent, but both are lacking in many areas versus the arcade.

I still say that Nintendo should have released a proper KI for the 64 (as they promised in the arcade game) before the end of the console's life. Games like RE2 demonstrated that they could have gotten the video and music in there with a larger cartridge.

That was one of my big disappointments with the N64 - that they never delivered with KI. Not that the game is even that great, but the arcade's production values were through the roof at the time, and the thought of having that at home got me really excited. KI Gold was probably the first game that started the "limitations of the cartridge format" argument for the N64.

count me in for the snes version as well. i'm not a big fan of the n64's controller either. now that i think about it, the snes pad isn't all that comfortable either, but i manage.

btw, KI is my favorite fighting game of all time (and yes, i have mk3 and sf2).

Am I the only one that doesn't care for either? I never 'got' KI.

It just bothers me when the guy your playing against can drop his controller after the fucking combo inputs and his character is still pounding the hell out of you. All the while, during auto beat down mode, he makes faces at you or taunts you in other inane ways. As I imagine AVGN would say regarding this, "That's a shitload of fuck!"

I was never a fan of KI either. Both versions are pretty good but I have no real preference.

I don't own either, but have played both.

One person said it and I agree, I have to go with the N64 version.

the SNES was cool and all, but the N64 version just felt more like an arcade game than just another fighter.

If you hate the auto-combos, then avoid WWF: Wrestlemania: The Arcade Game, and those auto-combos are insane.

Also, the auto-combos aren't near as bad as the Gameboy rendition. in Gameboy, you can seriously have the game on medium difficulty, and with a couple of the characters, you can just input a huge string of buttons for a combo and win every single round.

Yeah, KI: Gold I enjoyed way more than KI (oh yeah, I never got a copy cuz I was awaiting for a complete one on n64, hehehe)

I think we're all losers in this competition.

But I'll give the slight edge to the SNES version just because the chicks Nintendo hired to promote that game at E3 were really fucking hot. As a result, my life would be slightly less awesome if that game hadn't come out.

As someone who played the arcade version a lot, I thought the SNES version was sad. It was sloppy with terrible sound, although the music was ok. The soundtrack kicked ass and I used to drive around listening to it.

The N64 version's gameplay was extremely close to the arcade KI2. The 3D polygon backgrounds were odd, but I assume they did this to save ROM space. The music was also pretty good. Yes, the controller wasn't the best, but having 6 buttons on the face of the controller was superior to using shoulder buttons.

Although KI Gold was the superior port from the arcade, it was based on KI2, which was by far the inferior game. However, the combo and break system was infinitely easier to grasp for new players in KI2. In KI, you basically had to memorize button combinations for specific characters. KI2 had a very clear and obvious combo system.

Except for the ultimate combo, which is only possible when you are almost dead anyway, the auto-hits last for maybe 2 seconds, and that is only the combo enders, which mean the game is basically pretending 1 big hit is a bunch of little hits for drama's sake. If your opponent is literally dropping his controller during this time and still winning, then I don't know what to say.
