    Lightbulb NAVA Haiku/Halloween Details

This needs a separate thread because it's not going to get the proper attention buried three pages deep in the standard NAVA announcement.

TWO of the ways to score some of the ONE HUNDRED PRIZES of next Saturday's NAVA meeting have been revealed.

HALLOWEEN: Yes, it's almost here. If you come in a costume, you automatically get one of those prizes. However, at around 7pm we will also judge the costumes. If you win THAT, you shall receive the best of the 100 prizes. Of THIS YOU CAN BE SURE. How much holiday spirit do you have? Don't be sorry you didn't participate AFTER you find out what you would have won.

HAIKU: Do you Haiku? At 6:30 we'll read all haikus submitted by attendees that day. An independent judge will determine "thumbs up" or "thumbs down" based on the style and/or humor and/or videogaming relevance of your haiku. If you don't Haiku, it's THIS easy:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haiku

It's gonna be a fun and busy night. Glad to give away all this stuff we've accumulated over the past three years.

Details on this NAVA event in general:

Awesome. Haiku is new to me, so I don't know how it works. Lemme click the link right now and find out! Woo hoo!

It's gonna be awesome if people come dressed up to NAVA although I fear that we'll be seeing so many of Heath Ledger's Joker walkin' around.

But for whatever happens, NAVA is gonna be kick ass. See everyone Saturday!

For the Haiku, will there be a strict 5-7-5 syllable count or can they be more open or shorter?

    Haikus are easy.
    The count is five-seven-five.
    Unless you miscount one.

Seems this has been answered for me - but it absolutely has to be 5 7 5. I'll have sheets to enter your haiku on which has the "rules".

    Here is my prize-winning haiku:

    Sega was the best.
    Welcome to the next level!
    Now, Sega is dead.

I won a Star Wars T-shirt. Thanks Joe!

What was the prize for showing up in costume? I didn't receive one. No worries, I'm just curious.

How flexible will the haiku judges be when determining what constitutes a separate syllable? Sometimes there's some ambiguity.

For example, take the word "fire", which many people would consider to be one syllable. It rhymes with "liar"--which is clearly two syllables! Here's a link to the "fire" syllable debate:

    http://answers.google.com/answers/th...id/112732.html

Another example--would most people consider the word "aisle" to have two syllables? It sounds exactly like the contraction "I'll", which would clearly be one syllable! Oh, the headaches!

Just trying to help you work the kinks out beforehand to avoid any potential conflict! There could definitely be a situation. But I'm sure most people will be cool about it. Haiku on!
"As you traitors roast in your own juices, I will be safely ensconced three miles below the earth's surface, listening to my wax-cylinder player and enjoying a delicious phosphate!"

Follow-up to my own post: reading the article, and drawing upon my own background in phonetics, I can narrow down these syllabically-ambiguous words down to six categories.

Basically, you've got three diphthongs (think of them as "multiple vowels"), /ay/ (as in "my"), /ɔy/ (as in "boy"), and /aw/ (as in "how"), followed by a liquid consonant, /r/ or /l/.

So you could easily predetermine any potential "trouble" words and decide if you wanted to count them as one syllable or two.

/ay/ + /l/: aisle, file, rile, bile, etc.
/ɔy/ + /l/: oil, foil, roil, boil, etc.
/aw/ + /l/: owl, cowl, howl, towel, etc.

/ay/ + /r/: ire, fire, dire, higher, etc.
/ɔy/ + /r/: lawyer, foyer (American pron.), Verne Troyer, etc.
/aw/ + /r/: hour, dour, flower, power, etc.
"As you traitors roast in your own juices, I will be safely ensconced three miles below the earth's surface, listening to my wax-cylinder player and enjoying a delicious phosphate!"
