I was told that next-gen comes out in 1-2 years....is this true? If so, are they even giving systems a CHANCE? The ps3 JUST took off....the ps2 lasted forever...this gen of consoles seemed short.

Rumors. I'd expect to see the next Xbox in 2010, it won't be next year. The next PlayStation won't come out until at least a year or two after that, IMO. Sony needs to actually make some money on the PS3 first.
360-2010 makes sense
Ps3 kill it off around 2012 or so
Wii-2010 or 11?
But yeah we still have plenty of life left for these machines.
Because it makes no attempt to be great, it is therefore extremely great.

I think that we're going to see a longer wait for the next generation of consoles than people are currently thinking(the Wii non-withstanding. I'll bet money that we see a DSi/GBA style Wii upgrade by 2010). The global economy is in the literal shitter, Sony has yet to make money on the PS3, and Microsoft just did a huge front end upgrade to the 360 dashboard. Not to mention the XNA initiative and Netflix deal.
I think the earliest we'll see the new Xbox is 2011. The PS4? I don't even have a guess.
If anything I think they are all just going to make the systems smaller and cheaper, with possibilities of extra features not included on the original design. I don't think there will be a new generation of systems until they learn more from this one. I would probably expect there to be new handhelds comming out before there would be any home consoles. I know I really wouldn't want to invest in something new within' the next couple years because I really can't forsee anything being much different than it is now.
No new systems for atleast 3-4 more years!
better than listening to industry rumors, i think you can just take a look at the size of a console's library to tell where it is in its lifespan. most successful consoles only make it to about 1k games. the wii is only up to 400, the ps3 up to 230, and the 360 up to 380. based on those numbers, we have at least 3 years before seeing the next next gen console.

I still see the 360 on a five year run. I see the PS3 being seriously redesigned within a year, smaller and cheaper. The Wii will also get cheaper but with it being the leader by a large margin, I dont see them doing anything different unitl 2011. The five year cycle still applies to most consoles, the PS1 and PS2 bucking the trend.

I disagree with this. Snes, Atari, Nes, Genesis all had about 500 to 700 titles. You also have to remember that games are being released on the virtual console, which means less physical copies of games being released. Also, since there are three companies making a run at the console market, there will be more games disbursed between the three. With games costing so much these days, we will see fewer games overall than we have before. As the looking at a consoles library to determine its lifespan, I think that a better number to look at is how the system is selling profit wise. If the wii keeps on selling(which they profit from just selling the system), then there is no reason to relsese an upgrade yet.

4 more years!
I think we'll be ready holiday season 2010 for new consoles if the economy can pick up a little, otherwise holiday 2011.
