Why no real Pokemon game for consoles?

My friend and I were discussing the awesomeness of the N64 the other day, and we came across the point of Pokemon. We both agreed that if the N64 had come out with a real Pokemon game, it would have sold quite a bit better. Of course, then we also came across the fact that no Nintendo system console yet has had a real Pokemon game. Why do you think this is? It seems like back in the Pokemon heyday, it would have basically been like printing money.

Of course, I know GC had a Pokemonesque game, but you could only capture abused Pokemon or something.

Any thoughts?

The entire concept of Pokemon is to be portable. You need to get out there and "catch 'em all" as it were... trade with others, etc.

They're probably too lazy. Internet battles would work 100 times better than trying to find someone to link up with, but it's just too easy to recycle the same game over and over- making a new and engaging console-level experience will take a hell of a lot of work.

Pokemon is one of those games that just works best portable IMO.

I have 400+ hours into pearl version...

as others have said, the whole pokemon thing IS being portable and sociable with people, its every bit the collecting then battling real people, the 1 player rpg mode is only a small part of the whole experienice.

I think it would be great, Nintendo spent five years on Mario Galaxy.
