It's Oblivion with a new future setting... and I hated Oblivion with a passion.

    1) 5
    2) It's the freedom of Oblivion with a more interesting story, better combat, and more character.
    3) Right now the only problem I can think of is the minor glitches I've encountered (a lock up and getting stuck in the ground), but other than that it's pretty much (in the 5 hours I've played, which I know is not enough time to judge a game like this) the cream of the crop of "sandbox adventure" games.
    4) It is called Fallout 3, but when you ask if it's good enough to be in the series- I can't answer. I have not played the other 2 games, and probably never will.

    Rating: 3/5

    Plus:
    - Dialog trees
    - Skill checks
    - Decent writing
    - More diverse voice acting than Oblivion
    - Interesting over world to explore
    - Weapon/armor repair is a nice touch
    - Radiation is an actual threat
    - Deathclaws
    - Nice to see some of that retro 50's style was carried over
    - Feels closer to Fallout than Fallout 2

    Minus:
    - VATS is an "I win" button
    - Despite the skill checks I'm still stuck playing mini games.
    - Non firearms combat skills are useless
    - Non VATS combat is horrible
    - No real C&C (choice & consequences)
    - Gore for the sake of gore.
    - No low intelligence dialog
    - Brotherhood of Steel is nothing like the BoS.
    - Elimination of traits and their merging with perks
    - All mutants are hostile
    - Just general canon related issues
    - Third person perspective is horrid
    - Setting is essentially recycled instead of expanded.

I could go on but figure everyone gets the idea.

Worthy of the title Fallout 3? No...not at all. Fallout: DC? Sure. Fallout: Capital Wasteland? Sure. Fallout 3? Not at all. Fallout was created to be a simulation of pen and paper role playing in a video game.

Fallout 3 is a good post apocalyptic action-RPG lite. Hell it's a better spinoff than Tactics and BoS by a long shot. It's not a good Fallout sequel but it's a VASTLY better game than Oblivion which is a plus.

Still enjoying it, for what that's worth.

    1. 5 stars. Frankly, shaping up to be my game of the year.
    2. I absolutely loved Oblivion and I'm absolutely loving Fallout 3, though I will admit my general shitness at the game has forced me to slide back the difficulty setting all the way. I think VATS is a nice touch for those of us who aren't quite as action-oriented as others, but it can be a bit too temperamental for my liking. The voice acting does piss all over Oblivion's, however.
    3. Those glitches just won't go away, but at least they haven't killed another save file as of yet. The 'traders only have a finite amount of caps' I'll admit does enhance the experience of the game but can be annoying if you really need the caps.
    4. Couldn't really tell you as I've never played the first two.

    1) 4. If I'd voted two days ago I'd give it a 5, but I've ran into several really annoying bugs that I can't seem to get rid of.
    2) I did enjoy Oblivion and I really enjoy the open world feeling of the game. The environment is done really well and the voice acting is much improved.
    3) The bugs are killing me. I've run into the same picture fracturing bug every time I've headed to Rivet city. A save/reload doesn't fix it and I have to restart my game in Megaton. Also, the amount of inventory space when all of your armor and guns are factored in seems small.
    4) Yeah, it can be called Fallout 3. This is a simulation of a Paper/Pen roleplaying game, just with today's gaming properties vs older gaming models. It's a good game that will be great when they finally patch it.

    Default OK.

Ok finished it a couple days ago.

    1) 4
    2) Freedom to make decisions. Skills are useful. Character developement is a strength. Plenty of equipment and item choices throughout the game. Open world; exploration can be rewarding.
    3) I thought there was a lack of enemy variation. Ending sequence was too 'easy'. Final decision was silly for me since it did not have to happen (I don't want to give out spoilers here but I think this was particular to the ending I had). Many areas had a 'wait for the expansion' feel to me. The story really isn't any much better than Oblivion's, but it works better. Main Quest is too short.
    4) Skipped the first two as well but from what I have seen it's tough to tell if this is a sequel or a reimagining of the first games...

False. Spoiler: Uncle Leo (Or whatever his name is) is a friendly super mutant. I will edit this post to say my opinion in the future, I haven't finished Fallout 3 yet.

I fail to see how Fallout 3 even comes close to simulating the PnP gaming experience. There is very little disconnect between the player's skill and the character's skill. Everything from dodging attacks to aiming a gun is based entirely on the player's own ability to control the character...not the character's own ability to dodge an attack or aim a gun.

Obviously "I WIN" aka VATS is an exception, and a few of the speech checks as well. Overall though player skill determines 90% of what happens in the game...not character skill.

You're entitled to your opinion...I'm just not seeing what you're saying is all.

Also...for anyone who hasn't played the originals, and according to their posts WON'T play them, would I be too bold if I asked why?

Oblivion in the future. I do not consider this Fallout 3. The Black Isle Fallout 3 (google it, you can download the tech demo) was what it should have been.

I love the game and I'm very far into it. Played the first quest on my first character and beat the game in 12 hours (doing some side quests too)... didn't realize the game ENDS if you do the main quest.

With my new character I've explored 85% of the map, I'm level 20, and I'm just going around exploring. Probably have 40-50 hours logged.

I'm yet to find a glitch in the game... strange as this IS a Bethesda game! lol

    2) advantages is interesting story, interesting world, amazing graphics, lots to do/see, the VATS system.
    3) not enough long, in depth missions. wish there were more weapon choices, i miss the tongue in cheek humor of the original fallouts, i think the perks couldve been done better. a little more personality to the characters/story wouldve helped. sometimes crashes (which pc games dont? lol. the originals did!)
    4) yeah i think so, but it definitely feels a little different than the originals... its missing some of the writer's/creator's/designer's touch & charm (im not sure which of those were responsible for the humor, easter eggs & depth)

you should, its worth it. in context of story, stuff to see/do, immersiveness & humor, they are far superior. however, i would recommend fallout 2, as fallout 1 is time based (yet still a great game)

I gave it a 5. I liked Oblivion. This is Oblivion with a Fallout setting, not Fallout with an Oblivion engine though. It's not even REMOTELY as dialogue oriented as the original Fallout and Fallout 2, and it's about as far from Wasteland (which I can't believe no one has mentioned) as you can get. However, as a SPIRITUAL successor to the Fallout series, it's not bad at all. As a game in general, it's awesome as hell. As a Fallout...it's a bit weak. I still love it though.

One thing I didn't like is that your choices don't have lasting effects. I robbed the armory in Megaton, and the whole town came after me guns a blazing. I finally made it out of the front gate...then walked right back in and it was like nothing ever happened. There's a limited amount of consequence that really limits the immersion factor IMO.

    Positive:
Game is FUN. That still matter right?
Settings, textures, etc, all really impressive
VATS is a nice depature from straight action.
Slow motion scenes with VATS are VERY cool.
Background (plotwise) and such is very cool.

    Negatives:
VATS makes kills WAY too easy.
Violent for no purpose....WAY too bloody realistically. Seriously over the top.
Game is TOO easy. Deaths or no deaths...I'm waltzing through normal easily.
Conversational depth is minimal....plotlines so far leave something to be desired (I'm only level 6 though). I'd love to see 5x the conversation options that really affected your playthroughs....a la Mass Effect.
No consequences to your actions long-term.

    Go here...

    Good Old Games

Classic PC games, DRM free, optimized to work on XP and Vista without hassle. Both Fallouts are maybe $6.00 a piece. They were having a deal where you could get both of them for like $7.00 not long ago. Site is credible since it's run by CD Projekt who did the recent PC RPG The Witcher.

If you're playing Fallout 3 you owe it to yourself to play the originals, which are IMO far superior. Two of the best RPGs ever made.

    Great stuff.

I'm yet to find a game that DOESN'T run in Vista. I have DoomII, Duke3d, Diablo II, etc all working fine. And yes, Fallout 1 and 2 work on Vista.
