AC Adapter for PC Engine GT

I'm buying a PC Engine GT without an AC adapter.

I was just going to find out the specs and head to the local radio shack trying to find a suitable replacement. However, I read online that the GT is very particular about what type of AC adapter it uses.

Should I track down an original PC Engine GT AC adapter? Would a radioshack replacement be alright?

In the meantime I plan to use NiMH batteries.

NiMH batteries will flatline REAL fast when they run out of juice... this freaks out the GT/Express. I'm not sure if it does any damage, but it definitely doesn't like the idea.

Thanks, I found a universal one from Radioshack that is 7.5V and 800mA.

I understand that the higher mA shouldn't matter as it will only draw what it needs. Is the extra 0.5V dangerous?

Most devices have a 10% voltage tolerance in either direction. So a 7V device will let you go 0.7V in either direction. Thus, up to 7.7V or down to 6.3V. The extra half a volt shouldn't make much of a difference.

The other clue that you're good to go is that the device takes 6 AA batteries. Each battery is 1.5V. Six of those makes for a total of 9V. Even on the lower end of the spectrum (some AA batteries, especially NiMH, only put out 1.2V or so), that's 7.2V.

I'd say you'd have very little to worry about.
