Default Metal Slug for the SNES?!?!?!?

I was wondering if there were any titles on the SNES/Genesis approaching the style/fun of Metal Slug (pick a port, any port). I've just gotten way too much into it lately on emulation and although I have the NGPC version, I'm wanting a similar experience on my big tv at home. I was interested in anything similar for the SNES (or Genny) without having to settle for Contra III. anyone have any ideas on titles similar to Metal Slug?

On the SNES you may want to look into:

    -Sunset Riders
    -Contra III (duh)
    -Super Turrican 1 and 2
-R2: Rendering Ranger (JP only, quite scarce, often hits $100+)

There's also TimeSlip, Realm and Doom Troopers, but they're all below average to mediocre IMHO. YMMV.

Please be mindful of the number of question marks and exclamation points you use in your subject titles. All new members of DP are allotted a limited amount of them upon sign up and you don't want to go through them too fast.

However, since I've been a member here for a while as well as a mod, I have stockpiled a nice overstock of punctuation I can lend to you. Try to ease up a bit and they should last for a while:

Man, I thought there was a bootleg Metal Slug for SNES floating around when I read the title. There IS, however, a pretty poor bootleg Metal Slug for the Game Boy Color. I'm surprised there isn't a NES boot yet, you know they still churn out multicarts by the droves in good old Hong Kong.

I'd recommend picking up a consolized Neo MVS + Metal Slug carts. Playing Metal Slug is the only way to satisfy a Metal Slug craving

    SNES by far.

The Genesis version ain't bad but is clearly outshined by the SNES version in the graphics and sound department (for obvious reasons). According to it's Wiki entry:

While the SNES version is fairly faithful, the Mega Drive/Genesis version has some very drastic changes made to the mechanics and overall gameplay. Most notable of these changes are the removal of the characters Steve and Bob as well as four out of the eight original levels. In finer detail, the set designs have been either changed or cross-transferred in some cases. The boss fights also differ due to a change in platforms or weaponry used by the boss. However, the Mega Drive/Genesis version does allow some options that are not available in the SNES version such as the ability to shoot dynamite, a full length Native American level with enemies of its namesake, a two player versus mode, and a bonus stage on horseback. As for the layout itself, each stage consists of two parts: a half-stage where you must save a captive from a group of enemies and then the boss stage. Each half-stage takes around the same amount of length as a normal stage, so it leaves the effect of being eight stages long.

Due to size constraints voice clips of each boss were replaced with text-based voice bubbles. This was done to every speaking line in the game aside from death groans and the sound clip, "Thank you nice boys!", of which is spoken each time a captive is saved.

The Mega Drive/Genesis version has an entirely different bonus stage in which the player(s) must catch power-ups and rewards being thrown from a quickly moving wagon while riding on horseback. A gold star is required in order to make it to each bonus stage. A bonus stage occurs after every boss fight (except for the last).

You also might want to look into GUNFORCE for the SNES.

Or you can be naughty and MAME it. I don't play much MAME but when it comes to games like Sunset Riders, X-Men arcade, Simpsons, etc. then it is much more rewarding (most of the time it's the only option you have aka. Simpsons and X-Men Arcade). I have to admit though, Sunset Riders is awesome no matter how you play it

DAMN I knew I was forgetting one, and I reviewed this game too, lol

A lot of people hate the SNES conversion but I enjoyed it enough to have more positive things to say about it than negative. Unlike Realm/TimeSlip, at least GunForce is beatable! Not to mention it has a 2-player option, even if it slows down. It's a run 'n gun that you can beat in under 20 minutes and that's refreshing IMHO. It's not a "good" game but if you're hankering for a quick fix you can nail down before an episode of "Fresh Prince" concludes, it ain't that bad.

Those death screams... I've heard them all over the place. Did it use the Wilhelm Scream?

well since every good answer i have was already put out there, i guess there are some gameplay similarities between metal slug and judge dredd. 2d game with multidirectional shooting and grenades. Haven't played it since genesis was the current gen but i remember liking it.
For lucky best wash, use Mr. Sparkle.

I hope I didn't use all of mine Sniderman.

Hey dude, if you have a 360 or a Wii (possibly ps3, I do not know anything about PSN, so I can't vouch for it), you are in business for big screen gaming. There is metal slug on xbl and wiiware, and I am unsure about if this one works with backwards compatibility (somebody here has to have tested this before, help me out) there is also Metal Slug for Xbox 1 which can be had for pretty cheap.

Thanks for the help. I'm thinking of just Metal Slugging it out on virtual console- until I can pick up those mentioned titles around in the wild.

Sorry for the misleading thread title. And for the obscene use of both question marks and exclamation points. I agree that my use of them was grossly inappropriate.

There's always the MS Anthology for Wii, although the lack of classic controller support is baffling.
