Default Before the 16 bit age - what were the best ports of Defender, Stargate, and Robotron?

    Title tells all.

Based on my searching here is how it stands:

Defender: Atari 800 (2nd places Intellivision)

Stargate: Atari 800 Proto (2nd place Atari 2600)

Robotron: (yes) Atari 800 (2nd place Atari 7800)

There were so many ports of these games, anyone care to disagree?

7800 totally had the better Robotron. For one, it was closer to the arcade in terms of speed and number of enemies at any given time.

Wasn't Stargate on the NES? I can't imagine that it was THAT bad a port...

It kinda was, but it was called Defender 2 instead of Stargate...not too bad a port.

I love the NES Defender II. Hands down the best Stargate/Defender game on the old consoles. The Atari 8-bit Defender is a close second and the 2600 Stargate is number 3

I prefer 7800 robotron over 8-bit but not by much.

The 7800 version of Robotron rocked for me. I just wished it had dual joysticks, and it would easily been the best pre 16-bit.

Never got to play Stargate or Defender on any other platforms besides Nes, and the VCS, but I loved all the ports with the Nes version of Defender II/Stargate being my favorite.

Great thread, maybe we can talk about other games too. Like which is the best version of Burgertime? But I guess everyone loves the Intellivison one (like me.)

I'm assuming you mean Robotron since the 7800 doesn't have a defender port.

As for Burgertime, I don't have an intellivision but I have the NES version and its pretty close to arcade perfect. In fact, I'm really impressed with the NES conversions of a lot of games like Galaga, Popeye, Xevious, Gyruss, Lode Runner, and Q-bert, Pac, Ms Pac, Donkey Kong, Mario (arcade). Haven't tried Millipede but its not very impressive on the emulator. Joust isn't very good on the NES either but Balloon Fight kicks its butt in the fun department anyway.

I love Bump and Jump but strangely prefer the 2600 version over CV or NES. It all comes down to gameplay for me on that title.

BTW, you can play Robotron with two joysticks on the 7800.

Yep, I meant Robotron, not Defender. I edited my post, but I don't know what I was thinking.

I had no idea you could play with two joysticks on the 7800 one. That rocks. Actually when it come to Burgertime I don't really like the NES version that much. Mainly due to its difficulty level, it just seems like the food fiends move a little to fast, and Peter Pepper moves a tiny bit slower than he should. I actually like the 2600 version better than the nes.

Love the 7800 version of Robotron, its better than the 800 version(I have both). Love the Nes version of Burgertime, but dang the version on intellivision is impressive. I prefer defender II on the Nes as well.

As long as we are talking classics, we might as well throw space invaders into the mix. I for one really like the TI-99 version called TI invaders. Best of all, it is dirt common.

I just tried Defender II on the NES for the first time on an emulator, and it's pretty cool but I was surprised to hear a lot of sounds recycled from Punch Out. Were a lot of early NES games like this?
