Default d-skin - snap on disc protectors

I was at walmart tonight and got a five pack of d-skin disc protectors for a buck.

Are these safe to use? Will it wear out my consoles lasers faster?

If you don't know what a d-skin is, their website is here: http://www.d-skin.com/

They'll scratch the shit out of your discs. This I have seen firsthand.

Probably make the laser work harder or have more read errors since they're not flush on the back of the disc.
RIP bargora, you will be greatly missed. That is how we do things on Giedion Prime.

Don't use those. They add extra weight to the discs and can cause them to wobble on the spindle. A lot of disc drives won't read 'em anyway.

I love the promotional video from their site, and their contest which lets you spam-a-friend for a better chance to win.

If you treat your stuff badly enough to get scratches like that, you probably wouldn't care enough to avoid scratches. Even when I was a kid I was careful with CDs, I never understood how people could badly scratch them(light scratches I could understand from accidents, but it's hard to scratch them badly).

When I worked at a GameCrazy we got these in when they first came out. Parents bought them for their kids and they actually worked. One of my coworkers bought a set and kept his games in the metal container with the skins on and used it like a carry-all for his games.

They're ugly, but as far as I know, nobody ever had a problem that bought them from the store I worked at.

Like others have said- you should probably avoid sloat loading drives, the people I know used them in PS2 and Xbox systems, I have no exp. with PS3 or Wii systems. The best protection of course is to be careful, but for something like kids dvds these are perfect.

the bottom of your optical media is a protective layer already. this is just redundant, plus the drives you put these things into were not engineered to have these things in them. I always thought these disc covers seemed like an awful idea.

also you have to deal with the possibility of greatly increased read errors due to refraction. EM Radiation travels at different speeds through different mediums. So the laser travels on speed through the open air another through your Dskin back to the open air if it isn't perfectly applied and then through the discs bottom layer. as it does this due to slight imperfections in read angles and things like that it can bend off course causing it to misread data which the cd drive will account for and reread the sectors it missed. This puts unneeded stress on the laser unit and the motors that move it around. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Refraction

I remember seeing these Advertised in OPM when they first came out. I always wondered if they would work, apparently based on the majority of people say they are BAD.
I tried to look back to find out who made them, but never found out until NOW! Thinking about if I should buy them or not.
    BTW: Thanks! for posting this.

Wow thanks for the replies guys. I'll just toss these things. It sounds like they're not worth the trouble.

I was thinking of tossing them anyway. They don't sit flush with the disc itself. I was afraid that the disc would spin inside of the disc cover and that it would warp it somehow.
