A friend of mine is interested in selling her PS3, supposedly the model she has is prone to problems she says. Besides the games loading a little slow there hasn't had any issues.

Are some PS3s prone to kicking the bucket early? And does Sony fix them for a decent price if something does happen? It's a 60 gig model if that helps.

I thought Sony was charging $125-$150 to repair the console. If I am wrong, please correct me but I thought that was the rate they charged.

The 60gb version is the best model you can buy, she might just have a funky system. It happens with all mass produced items though, the PS3 is a reliable machine.

Yeah I've heard a few system are shakey but I've never had a problem with my 80gb unit. Games load slowly while they hard drive but after that it isn't too bad. Worst comes to worst ask to play hers for awhile and check it out first hand.

Unfortunately she lives in another state. But I'll see if she can't test it a bit more.

Yup, $150 is the rate for repair.
These cartridges are dirty as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore!

What exactly goes wrong? Any simple fixes to prolong the systems life?

    Default hmmm...

I haven't heard that any specific model is prone to problems. PS3 failures seem to be in line with the failure rate of any form of home theatre equipment and not specific to model...it's just luck of the draw. They might have dropped a pallet at the warehouse...

Its a well built system, but more and more BR lazers are failing in models. More reliable than XBOX thus far. SOME are easy to fix depending on the problem, I have refurbished 2 PS3s myself cause they only cost around $200 that way.

This should tell you where PS3 compares to 360 on the failure rate.

My 60 gig has only ever hiccuped while playing Gran Turismo 4 (PS2). We thought that it might be the disc, went out and bought a sealed copy, and it chugged just the same. All other PS2 games play just fine. Chalk it up to the fact that the fully backwards compatible 60 gig isnt FULLY backwards compatible with all titles.

I say my PS3 (60 GB too) has NEVER had problem with anything. Including when and I quote "Gave a Firmware Update for Brick the system" this didn't happen to me.

I would say look on YouTube and search PS3 Failure and XBOX 360 Failure and see who has more results.
ANSWER: XBOX 360 By along shot.

I rarely read the PS3 crashing or bricking or anything hardly. XBOX 360 is 98.00% of the time.
