Default How many versions of Centipede for Game Boy?

Like the title says, I'm wondering how many versions of Centipede came out for Game Boy or Game Boy Color only (not including Game Boy Advance).

I own two of the versions and in a pawn shop the other day, I was a little surprised to see what appeared to be a third one that I don't own.

I've looked it up in the rarity guide but would appreciate additional input or even pictures of the various carts.

As far as I can tell, there was:

    1. -An earlier black and white release with Centipede only
    2. -A Centipede/Millipede combo
    3. -A Super Game Boy compatible version of Centipede by itself (a reissue of #1)
    4. -A Game Boy Color specific version of Centipede by itself

Correct me if this is wrong.........

Now the one I saw in the pawn shop was a black cart, which I assume is either #3 or #4 of those above. I already own the first 2.

I was planning on going back to get that other Centipede cart this Wednesday but would appreciate a summary of Centipede on GB & GBC only.

In closing, I already understand that all of the versions are identical in graphics, sound and gameplay it appears. I'm just interested in getting all of the versions for collecting purposes.

There were three versions for the original gameboy. One was released by Accolade, then by Majesco. The third version was in Nintendo's 'Arcade Classic' series, which is the cart that also had Millipede. That third one was Super GameBoy compatible, though the Majesco version has the SGB logo on it (I don't know that it had any enhancements though).

If the cart you saw was black, then it's for Gameboy Color (but will play on the OG Gameboy).

The black cartridge you refer to is the only version that was released for Game Boy Color - #4 below. But you will have to have either a Game Boy Color or Game Boy Advance/SP to play it, as it will not play in a black & white (original) Game Boy.

From what I can tell, there are 4 versions of Centipede (for Game Boy Original and Color), though I've only ever seen 3 of them. Best way to identify them is by the DMG code printed on the left-hand side of the label. Please note, the DMG#s below are for official USA releases:

    Game Boy Original:

    1) Centipede - Accolade (DMG-CZ-USA) - fairly hard to find!
    2) Centipede/Millipede, also known as Arcade Classic 2 - (DMG-ACPE-USA) - very common
    3) Centipede - Majesco (DMG-AC4E-USA) - I've never actually seen this cart, but am getting the information from this site, the rarity guide. Says it was a late release, reissue of the Accolade release with Super Game Boy support, and specifically says not to be confused with the Game Boy Color release below that was done around the same time - 11/98!

    Game Boy Color:

    4) Centipede - Majesco (DMG-AC5E-USA)- quite common. I believe you are correct in saying they are all basically the "same game", but in this version the color in the game is definitely better/enhanced.

Need to correct my earlier post...if it is the black cartridge, it will work on the original Game Boy, Game Boy Color, or Game Boy Advance/SP. The black (Game Boy Color) carts are backwards compatible.

    Someone sounds like a Centipedophile.

Bumping this, because there might actually be a 5th version.

The one on the left is DMG-AC5E-USA (#4 listed above).
    The right one is DMG-AC5E-USA-1

For this one they actually changed the artwork.

I imagine the second one is a re-release from around the time the PS1/DC/PC 3d Centipede game was released, because that's the same cover art that game used. The contents of both are the same, though?
