Sort of related - if I could find a source for 80s Electronic Games magazine where each issue wasn't $30 (i.e. ebay) I'd be loading up on those... I only have one issue that I've held onto, and it's pretty torn up.
If you can't do it with 8 bits, you don't need to do it!
I subscribe to Play and GI.
Play-I enjoy this mag quite a bit. I like that they cover games that other mags do not. Covers are usually pretty sweet. Topics covered are different than what you see in other mags. Has a nice hobbyist/enthusiast feel to it. I'm glad they did away with the scores as well. If it was a platformer or featured a female lead, Dave Halverson was giving it at least a 9.
GI-This mag is not all that bad considering it comes with the discount card. compared to Play, this is like a juvenile 90s mag. Not that it is a bad thing. Kinda nice to have two mags that are different from each other. Of course, GI always has the best previews of any mag. I could see myself drinking a few beers and playing games with the staff.
Really though, the net is where it is at.
I used to subscribe to a bunch back in the day:
Next Generation for the pure facts and technical knowhow
EGM for their curmudgen review standards (I think there were only one or two Saturn games to get a combined score of at least 9.0)
(Ultra) Game Players for the personality and the unbiased approach to all systems
I've since bought a lot of these old mags from the times where I was most interested in them (1993-1999), and while some certainly aren't the objective, hard hitting reviews I remembered as a kid, there is still a ton of good information on product developments (like tracking the life of Sonic Xtreme) that you can't really find anywhere online today. You can get all the cheats, guides, reviews, etc. but it's that timely look at in-production games that still give these magazines relevance for collectors and historians. It's kind of fun to see how perceptions towards certain games and consoles have shifted over the years, too.
I've always meant to get into Retro Gamer, but yeah, the price tag is way too steep.
"Enduro" is a symbolic journey through life via the media of a race.
Also wanted to add:
Who the hell has been proof reading/Editing Play recently? There have been so many typos and errors the past four months or so.
I buy Edge, Games TM, Retro Gamer & NGamer every month & also try to get Nintendo Power via eBay, but that's becoming virtually impossible to do so.
