Yeah, it's one of those "pause the game while you visit Grandma's house" kinda games. Just make sure your dog or cat doesn't trip over the controller cord and accidently reset your game... or un-pause it.
I believe the sequel had a save feature.
Yeah, the first Panzer Dragoon really plays like an old school arcade port. No saves and endless continues. You keep half expecting an "insert coin" dialog to pop up when you die. The Saturn's launch titles really didn't utilize the save function properly, with Astal being another big offender requiring an even longer sit through to finish, and this time with finite lives. Thankfully Sega rectified this for Zwei, which not only has save points, but a very intuitive statistic system and a bevy of extras that are unlocked based on the player achievements found in the save file. That Sega even utilized Zwei saves within Saga showed that while they had a shaky start in implementing the save feature in their games, by the end of the system's run they were really finding creative ways to push it to the maximum.
"Enduro" is a symbolic journey through life via the media of a race.
It does have a level select code, at least.
