Default xbox 360 copying games to the hard drive quesiton.

now that its been out for a while, (the feature to copy games to the hard drive to load and run faster) ive been wondering if anyone has been able to play games without the game actually being in the tray?

lets say its not because I dont own the games its because its a pain in the ass to put the games into the cd tray... yeah thats sounds good Im going to go with that one...

Nope, you have to have the disc in the tray. It's a copy protection measure to make sure you actually own the game and don't just borrow/rent the game and then install it. Either buy the game (new or used whicher is convienient for you) so that you have the disc or don't be lazy about putting the disc in if you own it already.

The one thing it IS good for is if your disk is scratched to hell and back - borrow a good copy, install to the HD and as long as your original is good enough to authenticate it... you should be good to go.

Sure, it's easier then you think. I probably shouldn't talk about it here, but anybody wants to know, send me a PM.

Weren't you the one discussing about how as a game developer yourself, it is wrong for people to pirate games?

    Default Older 360

The problem i'm having with this is..

I have been having a problem playing FORZA 2 on my 360..The Game CD is mint with no scratches..
It freezes and or I get a pop up window that the disc is unreadable..

So I installed the game on my HD and it still happens..

I figured it's the disc because my 360 with play every other game that I own with no problem, currently playing Fallout 3...
    ...........................
Yet the Game works with no issue on my Sons(new Arcade 360)

I plan to buy another copy of Forza 2 as they are only $12.99 used...and see what happens on my 360
    ..
    Otherwise:
    I don't what to do next,...,Get a new 360 ..
Just this one game doesn't work and even installed on the HD.
I'm more worried that the system is got an issue that no matter how many copies I own they'll never work..

Plus with the Forza 3 coming out

Is this in theory, or on a dev unit? On retail units, every Tim and Joe can make their drive play "back-ups" with just a sata card, however, to make your hard drive skip a code would be very difficult, and probably not easily possible. Wouldn't have to alter the actual xbox's kernals and such to get it to skip over such a process? I suppose with an infectus it could be done, but you would really have to know what your doing, otherwise you would quickly have a large paperweight.

    That made me laugh.

Hey, I am against people illegally downloading games, but if you want to know how to do it I will tell you, just keep it on the DL...

No mods, it relies on a glitch in an older XBLA title. Short version, when you force this XBLA game to crash, it leaves some of it's code in memory. When you try to load your game off the hard drive, the hypervisor doesn't notice the title has changed so it allows execution.

Microsoft was notified of the issue months before the NXE came out and they chose not to patch it. Now, more then a year later, the bug still exists so obviously Microsoft doesn't care.

It's been published in a couple places already, so it's not like it's a big secret.

I'm actually really curious as to how this works because I was under the impression from what I had read that HDD installs didn't actually install the entire contents of the disc onto the 360 and that was the reason it required the disc to be in the drive apart from the obvious piracy concerns.

Sounds like wherever you read that is confusing the caching that any 360 title will do with a HD installed with installing to the hard drive, or just didn't know what they're talking about.

Installing rips the disc to your hard drive basically creating a virtual drive with your disc in it. Your real game disc only spins for a moment upon startup to verify you have the disc.

Edit - Somehow I'm not surprised you didn't tell how to supposedly do this.
