Question Who Here Has Even HEARD of This Game?

It's called Indy 800, and it was released in 1975. It used a massive cabinet (with mirrors for other people to watch the action) and allowed 8 people to play a color racing game (the first of its kind) at once. Indy 800 apparently revolutionized racing games. I hadn't even heard of this game until I saw how All Game Guide gave it 5/5 stars. Indy 800 inspired the classic Atari 2600 game Indy 500, as well as the 4-player arcade game Indy 4. Someone on another website informs me that a working unit can be found at The Game Room in New Jersey. Do you know anything about this game?

Know of it? I used to play it when I was a kid. (A real young kid.) Was in some arcade in Louisville, KY, as I recall. I remember the arcade had mostly pinball and pool tables, but it also had a Star Fire machine as well as a Fire Truck game.

I vaguely recall playing that game when on vacation with my fam back in the 70's at a hotel in Milwaukee.

Does anyone know of anywhere where this game can currently be found? Are the rumors about The Game Room true? Thanks.

Indy 800 was at the center of an arcade I used to fequent in my youth. Great game to play with a bunch of friends. Man that brings back memories.

I'm just wondering why Atari decided to make 799 sequels of the game before they finally hit on a winner.

    !!! Now I need a screen wipe.

I played this when I was 8 at the Menlo Park Mall with Garry Shandling.

Was there a later racing game that used this same format, with several people standing around the cabinet looking down at the shared screen? The screenshots of Indy 800 don't jog any memories, but the general design of the cabinet is awfully familiar.

Wow, the skating rink down the street had one of those when I was a kid, and I hadn't thought of it in ages. Thanks!

Sprint 4 or Sprint 8, most likely.

A friend and I got seriously addicted to Fire Truck at California Extreme maybe two years ago, very disappointed it wasn't at this year's show.

Usually, the context and content of Garry's posts are quite fitting, a thought-out commentary denoting the lunacy, unimportance, or uselessness of a given thread. Usually I agree with him, but not this time. Then again, maybe he just wanted to give a thumbs up to Indy 800. Long Live Garry.

Hmm, now I'm puzzled. I remember something with significantly newer "RC Pro-Am style" graphics than Sprint 4 or Sprint 8 ... in fact, I'm remembering something like Championship Sprint or Super Sprint after checking KLOV's screenshots.

But neither of those came in a "stand-around" cabinet like Indy 800 and Sprint 4/8 as far as I can tell. Was there anything like a conversion kit for those older cabinets that would have allowed an owner to stuff a Championship/Super Sprint inside? I'm almost positive I played a "stand-around" game with newer color graphics.

It wouldn't make sense to release a kit to take you from the old versions of Sprint to the new ones -- some or all of the old Sprint games were black and white and the '80s Sprint games were of course color. Plus the older games were 10 years old so the odds of still having one and wanting to upgrade to a newer one would have been really slim. Most conversion kits were for JAMMA games, ones that could be swapped out in an afternoon. Putting a Championship/Super Sprint game in an old Indy/Sprint cabinet would be a major, major undertaking.

I suspect you're probably remembering the bigger, 3-player Super Sprint cabinet and combining memories. Or, maybe there was a Championship/Sprint cocktail cabinet?

Found it: Hot Rod 4-player (Sega, 1988). Sorry to have derailed the thread, but it was obviously inspired by the Indy/Sprint cabinets and it was driving me nuts.
