Question Gamecube controllers on Wii problem, please help!

Sorry if this has been asked already, I did a search and didn't find any threads on it. So I downloaded Contra Rebirth last night and attempted to use a Wavebird. My Wii would not recognize it, only the Wiimote. I also tried it with some VC NES titles(SMB 3, Punch-Out!!) and the result was the same. At this point I thought maybe the batteries in the Wavebird were too weak so I tried a wired Nintendo brand Cube controller and still no luck. I went and got Wario Ware out (Gamecube version) and booted it up with the Cube controller plugged in. It would get to the memory card screen and lock up. I know the Cube controller and Cube titles take away Wiimote functionality but the Cube controller was doing nothing for me either. I have used my Cube controllers on the Wii before but it's been a while and probably a couple of updates ago. I also tried multiple ports thinking maybe that was it but no luck there either. I am running the 4.1 firmware and no mods or anything of that nature. Anybody got any ideas on this one? Thanks!

Are you certain you've got the controller plugged in the correct port? Remember that Wii's Gamecube controller ports are in reverse order.

I did think about that. I didn't try every port but I did try more than one. I'm just not understanding because I have never had a problem getting my Wii to recognize the GC controllers before last night. I am going to try again after work and see if I can figure out what the problem is. I may have to call Nintendo's tech support *UGH*

Thanks BetaWolf, that did the trick! Here's my sign I plugged it into the port closest to the power button and it worked like a charm. Also thanks to the 50+ folks who read my question and didn't say a word :P
