I'd like to request some help in compiling a good comprehensive list of home console video games which feature gameplay where the player is a giant monster in the vein of Godzilla-type cinema (kaiju eiga). I'm especially interested in any unknown ones for classic consoles, but I'd like to know about modern options as well.
The catch is that I already know about Rampage and all its various ports and sequels, as well as anything involving Godzilla. Those are covered. I'd like to hear about ones less well-known or forgotten. A couple more criteria to consider:
- U.S. Releases only (I need this list for an upcoming project. Don't have time or money for imports.)
- The "Less Robots" rule: If the game involves only giant robots (Iron Soldier, Mechassault), it doesn't count. If it involves only one or two robots amid a majority of monsters (e.g. - War of the Monsters, PS2) that's fine.
- Giant apes are fine (and who doesn't love giant apes?) as long as it's not Donkey Kong or Congo Bongo. Those aren't necessarily "giant" apes, nor are they necessarily playable characters.
- Games where you, as a human, fight against the giant monster are okay so long as that's the prevalent theme of the game, and not just something you do in a particular boss fight. And it has to have the Saturday Matinee cinematic thing in mind; monsters rampaging through the streets and all that. Flying in space and shooting lasers is not the same thing.
So, with those parameters in mind, the only ones I can think of off the top of my head are:
War of the Monsters (PS2)
Primal Rage (Genesis, SNES, Jaguar, etc)
King of the Monsters (Genesis)
Anyone?
