3D Dot Game Heroes is set in the Kingdom of Dotnia. This world was once made up of 2D sprite art like something out of an old school game. However, wanting to attract more people to the kingdom, the king decided to use technology to make everything 3D. This is where something goes horribly wrong, although just what that is has yet to be specified.

Despite the retro theme, the game does look impressive technically. It's being developed by Silicon Studio, a developer who worked with From on PSP's Onore no Shinzuru Michi wo Yuke, but who also does middle ware.

In line with the visual style, 3D Dot Game Heroes has some traditional RPG themes. The game's background story involves six magic orbs which were stolen by a demon of darkness, who was then defeated by a brave swordsman and sealed away using the combined power of the orbs. You play as the grandchild of that brave swordsman, and you're tasked with saving the world.

Looks, sounds, and plays like a 3D version of the 2D Zeldas...with a slight style of the 2D Final Fantasies (lots of bright colors).

Anyways. From Software is an awesome company. King's Field games, Evergrace games, Armored Core games, and Demon's Souls. This game will probably be good as well. They did some of the Tenchu games too, but the series sucks in my opinion.

I guess I'm the odd man out once again, I found the game boring as hell. And I'm not entirely sure why, either. I wanted to enjoy it and for the most part I did, but that didn't keep the phrase "this is kinda boring" from creeping into my mind every now and then.

There's lots of references to different classic games, so you'll probably really enjoy that.

Wish this would have been released on multiple consoles. It's one of two reasons I would like to pick up a PS3. Now if I could only find one cheap enough to warrant playing two games.

I think/thought this game was great. Another quirky Atlas game that caught my attention. It pays homage to the classic 8-bit games but has a sense of humor as well. I like the choice of main character or that you can create your own. Plus the game actually looks pretty good, I love the water effects. Music is enjoyable and who doesn't love using a tuna as a sword?

I don't necessarily find it boring, but it can be frustrating at times as its really easy to die in the dungeons. Also, if you pick the game up after not playing it for awhile, it's a bitch to figure out what you're supposed to be doing next.

Well, its a throwback to the Legend of Zelda. When your health bar is completely full you get a better effect, take one hit and the power goes back to normal. It is kinda crazy but its one thing I like about the game.


The entire game is a homage to classic RPGs, most obviously Zelda. There are many Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy references as well. The game is generally rather easy, except for the last 3 dungeons which can be a huge pain. After you complete the game you can unlock a 'spelunker' mode where one hit will kill you. Its necessary to beat spelunker mode to get the platinum trophy, so having a huge-ass sword will be very helpful.
