another for sweet home great game.
another for sweet home great game.
I just remembered The Legacy: Realm of Terror (DOS, 1993). Its gameplay is a blend of action, adventure (point and click style), and RPG. It's like Alone in the Dark meets The 7th Guest meets Dungeon Master.

amazing that this thread made it to the 2nd page and no one mentioned eternal darkness for the gamecube yet, that game was a serious mindfuck, you'd have to play it to see for yourself
sweet home as already been mentioned ad infinitum so i'll skip that one to go to
OVERBLOOD!!! man i love that game, its for the ps1, i created a thread on it a few months back, the controls are clunky and da graphics aged terribly, but the atmosphere and story are timeless, you should give that one a chance
siren has already been mentioned, but i havent seen anyone mention the game obscure (which i've never played, but i hear decent things about) and the kind of undderrated atlus game rule of rose for the ps2
i'll come back when i think of more, but definitly look into those
edit: dunno if this counts, and i havent gotten far enough into the game to decide for myself, but galerians for the ps1 might also be a game you'd like to consider looking in to

I'll second Eternal Darkness and Galerians (tho it's not super scary, but a great game nonetheless w/ some horror and sci-fi elements).
Rule of Rose is an awesome game but the battle engine just kills it. Real shame too because I was thoroughly enjoying it up to the first boss battle. XD
One of my favorite is any splatterhouse. The best being 2 or 3 for genesis
Oh, I never mentioned Theresia (DS), either. I keep hoping to find that for cheap someday; it sounds intriguing.

What about Chiller and Death Race on the NES? Anyone???
...
Well, I thought they were alright. Not nessecarily survival horror type stuff, but obscure and horror-themed nontheless.

The Typing of the Dead, motherfuckers!
Boosh!!
Obsecure and awesome!!
D2 is my favorite survival horror game of all time. The atmosphere of the game is just amazing.
Kenji Eno is brilliant.
How's the game Obscure?
Yes yes, the irony is noted.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre for the VCS.
(That's twice, today, I've used this image..)
I wouldn't place Typing of the Dead in the realm of obscurity since it exists in a few common formats and almost always see someone in cosplay with a dreamcast keyboard. It's also found in many convention gamerooms, dealer halls, and store shelves. Don't get me wrong, I agree it's a good and solid game adapted from the light-gun shooter just it's a known title in the gaming industry.

Not obscure for fans of the systems, but since they're older they might not be as widely known:
Dracula on the Inty - one of the platform's best, and has a killer 2p mode (joke intended).
Castles of Dr. Creep on the c64 - just a great puzzly platformer.
Fright Night on the Amiga - it wasn't a great game, but for some reason I always loved it and played it a lot. Probalby the huge character graphics and vampire/horror theme.
If you can't do it with 8 bits, you don't need to do it!
