Post Real-LIfe Distributed-Snooping Web Game To Launch in Britain [Slashdot]

corerunner writes 'A new internet game is about to be launched which allows 'super snooper' players to plug into the nation's CCTV cameras and report on members of the public committing crimes. The 'Internet Eyes' service involves players scouring thousands of CCTV cameras installed in shops, businesses and town centres across Britain looking for law-breakers. Players who help catch the most criminals each month will win cash prizes up to £1,000.'

I can't wait for those doing naughty things on camera get caught...

I'm guessing this should work like Amazon Mechanical Turk, where a group of people marking things wrongly will still not beat all the legitimate answers. In that system you could get more money by simply churning out answers more quickly (which is indeed cheating) but the overall goal of the project still was met because enough people did it "right." There won't be a critical mass of players working with criminals to mark legitimate examples of lawbreaking as "crime-free," for example.

I was more joking at the concept of a group where one guy commits an act of minor theft while the rest of the group reports him and then they all cash in.

IE: Something that someone is likely to try, but has already been thought of by the programmers.

Based on what I have been reading over the past years, people in the UK should be used to this by now.

True but on the plus side they have much lower crime rates than most other countries. In the US they have been content with mainly traffic cameras so far but I'm sure it's only a matter of time before it gets taken to the next level.
