Question How does the VERY first Genesis Model 1 US BOX look like?

One thing eats my mind for years.
As i am not a native american i've never been there in US stores back in eighties to see the launch of genesis.
So i am curious. How does the very first boxed genny looked like?
I mean was it a black box with a huge genesis logo and a SONIC game or without game?? Or was it with a Golden Axe 1? Ir without any games??
    Or like this?

The Genesis launched in the US with Altered Beast, so the image you posted is likely close to how it looked, if not it.

I bought a Genesis at launch, and it came with Altered Beast.

Sonic didn't exist then, nor did Golden Axe (on the home console), so those wouldn't have been on the cover of the box or included as pack-ins.

From my recollection, the US box looked very close to the box featured there if not exactly.

The controller didn't have a red start button though, aren't those Mega Drive controllers?

it had Altered Beast on the box. That looks very much like what I remember seeing in stores.

OP, I received a US Genesis upon launch, and that's the very same box.

Weirder still, that Start button's in a strange place. Either it's a proto pad, or the person who took the picture has a 3rd-party pad.

Yep, it's a launch one. Looks the exact same, down to the Altered Beast comment in the blue rhombus.

That's the box I got when it was new and came with Altered Beast. That genesis/controller probably didn't come with that box.

That Genesis controller is a 3rd party controller. No Sega 3-button controllers are rounded like that or have the start button in that position, or have it colored red for that matter.

Kind of ruins the picture lol.

I remember that flaming werewolf on the box. My mom was not impressed. I knew other parents who didn't like it either.
I was lucky I was paying with my allowance money.

As Tom Kalinske said: "you can't sell that in Kansas." Sega didn't know what they were doing.
He did the smart thing replacing it with Sonic and getting that Werewolf off the box.

The strange controller may be because (and you'll notice this if you watch certain movies and shows with game systems) they never show the actual controller for a particular system. First time I noticed it was the Drew Carey show he was playing a PS2 with a Xbox controller. I still don't know the exact reason for this still.
