    Default Seems like Nintendo only really made one REAL Mario per sys.

    Is it just me, or did Nintendo really only make one legit Mario game per system, except the NES.

    The Super Nes had Super Mario World, but really didn't get a true sequel to that game. Some may say that Yoshi's Story was the sequel, but it wasn't a sequel like Sonic 2 was a sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog.

    The Nintendo 64 really only had Mario 64. Can you believe that Mario 64 was available the day the N64 came out, yet there was never a Mario 64 2?

    The Nintendo GameCube has only had Mario Sunshine, and what a lackluster Mario that turned out to be.

    It always boggled my mind why Nintendo didn't just always have a team working on the next Mario, when they finished the previous one.

    Sega gave Sonic alot of sequels. Naughty dog gave Crash alot of sequels.

    Yet Nintendo would only do Mario games when they really felt like it.

    Game Boy had two. Mario Land 1 and 2 were both through and through mario games, until Wario apparently became the game boy mascot.

    snes had Super Mario All-Stars, you have to count it as it far improved graphics and was selled a lot

    and gamecube afaik is going to get a 2nd mario game

    for n64, you are right, but that would be only one console of the four and it is the worst of the consoles, a reason why they didn't make a 2nd one could be the huge mass of jump&runs on that systems, most of them meant a huge profit for nintendo (banjo....) so they would have competed with their "own" games with a 2nd mario, and btw, they also had a yoshi game.... you get the point

    Mario all-stars was a collection of previously released games, no way that counts as ANYTHING. I've also been told that there won't be a second mario for gamecube.

    mh i don't agree with you sylent, All-Stars of course was a re-release of nes/famicom games BUT they were all redesigned (so there was a real production time, not as much as smw needed, but there was a time) and one was released for the first time in the us. for nintendo, this was a real mario game, it had to be produced, it was advertised a lot and it was a huge seller, so why don't count it????? i of course wouldn't count SM All-Stars & SMW as an 3rd Mario

    In my first remarks, I said except the NES. To me the NES was the only Nintendo system to feature a legit sequel to a huge Mario game.

    As for Mario All-Stars, I wouldn't count that. It's not an original Mario game to followup a previous Mario game on that system.

    As for Banjo and Yoshi on the N64, they aren't Super Mario 64 2, so they wouldn't count either.

    Face it, when it came to giving people what they really wanted (More Mario games with that classic Nintendo Magic), Nintendo didn't deliver.

    I don't know about you guys, but when I first got my Nintendo 64, and was playing Super Mario 64 for like 5 months, I thought for sure that I would see a ton of new Mario games on the N64 using that great game engine.

    Banjo was a great game to hold my interest, but I wanted another Mario 64.

    For the record, there are two Mario Games listed for the Gamecube as announced. Super Mario 128, and Super Mario Sunshine 2. HOWEVER, the database isn't always totally accurate in this regard, for example, there are two Donkey Kong games coming out for the GBA, Donkey Kong + and Mario and Donkey Kong, which are the same game, but renamed.

    I can't confirm it, but I seem to recall hearing that there are two mario games being worked on, though, one a true sequel to the Mario series (which sunshine is kind of 'outside' the lineage according to Nintendo), the other a sequel to Mario sunshine. Can anyone confirm this with a news item/interview?

    The thing that pisses me off about platform games is the fact that most of them have the same boss

    crash = dr cortex
    mario = bowser
    sonic = dr eggman

    how many time do you have to beat them before they quit coming back in the next game.

    Its kinda like the old transformers eps. where megatron allways thinks he will win and right when he thinks he has won optimus wips his ass and thats just about every show bad guy is trying to beat the good guy bad guy thinks he is winning then BAM good guy beats him.

    point is having to battle the same boss at the end of a game sucks

    I have to disagree with the contention that Yoshi's Island (full title: Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island) wasn't a true sequel to Super Mario World. The gameplay in Yoshi's Island uses the same side-scrolling fundamentals beneath its new concepts, and the map progression, though more linear than SMW, is in the same style. It's different from (and better than) SMW in many ways, but Yoshi's Island is still close enough to be a dedicated sequel.

    Super NES also had Super Mario RPG. N64 had Paper Mario. Not mario sequels in that they are platformers but they ARE mario games.

    So that gives us
    NES-Mario 1, Mario 2jap, Mario 2 US, Mario 3
    SNES-Mario World, Yoshi's Island, Mario RPG
    GB-Mario Land, Mario Land 2
    N64Mario 64, Paper Mario
    Cube-Mario Sunshine, Mario 128(upcoming?)
    the only system without a true mario game is the game boy color.

    I think not releasing several Marios per system is the wiser course of action, although I do wish they could release two quality games per console (a new game every 2.5 years say.) You don't oversaturate the marketing power of your character if you take your time between releases.

    Think about it - regardless of what you think of the game now, you were pretty stoked about it's release.

    And I think your observation, which may have been valid over the last two generations, doesn't hold water this time around. I've heard of two newer Zelda games, plus a sequel to Prime as well, all in the works for what is fast becomming my favourite system of all time. There were only one of each of those on SNES (and although there were two Zelda N64 games, Samus didn't make it there at all). Remember also that the NES had a longer life span than the other big N machines.

    Parting comment: Luigi's Mansion might not have been a Mario game per se but it's at least a pseudo Mario game in my books.
