Default Genesis Game Genie: why should I care for it?

Here's the deal: I have a Genesis Game Genie (brazilian one) that came with the Megavision a friend gave me. I think I only used it once, since I'm not that much of a fan of the Game Genie premise. It's been lying there ever since, unused.

Still, I read here somewhere that you can use it to circumvent region locks and stuff like that. Is it the case (the Megavision already has a US/JP key, but there's always European carts)? Besisdes that, is there another usage for it that I'm not aware of?

Noob P.S.: What's the little key (which lights the green led) on it for?

Yeah if you have games that are too hard or designed badly so you can't beat them, you can use the Game Genie to beat many games that are too hard for you.

Infinite Lives or energy codes are cool. So are level skip codes.

I'm a collector, but only to a certain extent.
Not as extreme as Rickstilwell though.[/quote]

The only reason I own a Genesis Game Genie is because Zany Golf is one of the early Genesis games that gets locked out on later systems. And I have to play Zany Golf!

Many of the codes found around the net are the official Galoob codes, which are mostly standard cheats like infinite lives/credits/ammo/fuel/etc. If you hunt around on the various homebrew code sites you can find the more interesting codes like debug menus, test levels, unused items, beta features, etc. Those kinds of unusual codes are what make the Game Genie worth owning IMO.

In fact, that's exactly the kind of thing I'm not attracted to - hence the thread. But I admit that I never played one of those beasts like Battletoads (even though it's reportedly easier on the Genny), so I might bite my tongue someday.

Cool! I guess I'm gonna start looking for those and give the damn thing some use, after all. I even thought about selling it at soem point, but felt bad about it. After all, it's a little hard to find one of these around here, and I got mine for free...

My Genesis Game Genie has been useful for playing the lone Mega Drive game I own, Rainbow Islands Extra, the MD carts fit on top of the Game Genie like a dream. My main reason basically for having one around, I don't use it for cheats anymore, if a game kicks my butt, too bad, just keep playing to get better.

It's useful for creating a ridiculously unstable way to play a Nomad.
