Default 3D Realms CEO Teases Duke Nukem 'Resurgence' in Coming Years

If they're going to release Duke Nukem Forever, or as I like to call it Duke Nukem For Never, then should I post this in the classics section? The damn game has been in development for over 12 freaking years. Since they are developing multiple Duke games, maybe one of them will be good. I used to play Duke Nukem 3d for hours, great game. I even played the 3 original Duke games, they're "ok."

"There are numerous other Duke games in various stages of development, several due out this year..."

I think they should change the phrase beating a dead horse, to beating a dead Duke, or maybe something more clever.

Hmm...there were only 2 Duke Nukem games before Duke 3D. Maybe he's thinking about Commander Keen?

Maybe it was 2, I could be mistaken, it might have just felt like 3 then. You guys are right, because usually they make the 3rd game "3d". Gex 3d is the 3rd game. Earthworm 3d is the 3rd game.

The original game we call Duke Nukem came in three episodes, and even on the Duke 3D retail disc they seem almost like three different games (they each have their own executable, even their own folders if I remember right).

Anyway, more Duke = ho hum. More GOOD Duke = now we're talkin'.

But having re-acquainted myself with some of the later Duke offerings (Time To Kill and Manhattan Project, both fun in their way but not really good games actually) I think they need to find a team that can do the franchise justice. Also, Duke is probably one of the least inspired heroes on the tip of anybody's tongue. Bruce Campbell flick quips, laryngitis, throwing cash at strippers (before shooting them, lol) and roid rage are not essential parts of a compelling character.

"Nobody steals our dicks, and lives"

Now, that original Duke - the funnier one that liked Oprah and Lethal Weapon - I liked him.

things have changed in the past 10 years.

i am not sure a comedic first person shooter would do that well now. the most popular fps games tend to have a more realistic or a dark/serious tone.

Well "Serious Sam 3" is coming out, and that game (well the first anyway) was nowhere near dark/serious.

I heard good things about this Wired article on the history of Duke:

I don't even see the value in this franchise any more. It's like talking about Michael Jackson to my young nieces. I saw Michael Jackson as the guy that recorded Thriller and got a little weird, whereas they saw him as a child molester who apparently recorded some music before they were born. I think we're already at a point where the Duke Nukem franchise represents a game that has been delayed for a decade instead of a good first person shooter. I'm surprised just attaching Duke's name to a project at this point doesn't send investors running and screaming in the opposite direction.

I agree that the whole Duke Nukem Forever saga merits its own phrase, but I think it should be reserved for a special purpose - something beyond a dead horse. What I mean is this...

The horse isn't just dead, but completely decomposed to the point of no longer existing in any singular, physical form. Its remains have totally dissolved into simple nutrients, which now fertilize the soil beneath which it fell. This now-enriched earth spurs the rapid growth of several generations of grass; the abundance of which draws several other horses to permanently dwell in its pasture.

These horses live out their natural lifespans happily - eating the grass, absorbing their nutrients. But the procession of years inevitably take their toll, and in time these horses too come to fall over, dead. This cycle then proceeds to repeat itself indefinitely — until the very end of Existence.

That's what it means to beat a dead Duke.

Oh, there's money to be made. All other things being equal, I doubt that a game with the Duke Nukem Forever name slapped on it would sell less copies than a game without it. The name has had a decade's worth of free advertising now, after all.

    Its a non-serious FPS.

I didn't say it was going to pull record sales numbers.

Maybe the Manhattan Project? It felt like the first 2 Duke games (side scrolling and all). Getting an XBLA port, and it's cheap on GOG.com already- reccomended!

This is a good point, but EA also slapped the "Goldeneye" name on a PS2/Xbox fps game in order to try and get a large portion of the sales that were achieved thru Goldeneye 64. I probably don't need to tell you that EA's version of Goldeneye didn't even sell a third of what the N64 classic sold.

Ah, but without the Goldeneye name, I reckon it would have sold even less! After all, we're still talking about it now, aren't we?
