Default NEC Memory Base 128 for PC Engine

Hey, guys. My friend snagged me this item off eBay as a gift. It's supposedly a memory expansion for the PC-engine Duo that plugs in through the controller port, and runs on 4 AA batteries. It plugs into a US Duo just fine. Unfortunately, I can't figure out how to access it. Going into the memory utlitity on the Super CD Bios doesn't really do anything...it doesn't seem to identify it.

Does anybody know how these things work? It appears that there was a battery leak in this thing at some point because there's dried copper sulfate spattered throughout the battery case, but the connectors all look clean. Any clues?

    Thanks in advance!!

    Update:

Okay, I'm a moron. I was plugging this thing into a Duo tap and not realizing that you're supposed to daisy-chain it between the console and your controller. So, great, did that. Unfortunately, when I do this, half the buttons on the joypad don't work. Take the memory base out of the equation and the pad works just fine. So, I guess my question is:

Is the thing busted or is this a problem with the Japenese pinouts not being compatible with a U.S. Duo?

    Thanks again, geniuses!

I've never heard of one of those, do you have a picture?

Here's some pics I took of it:

Turns out, I think the controller port is just plain busted. Apparently this thing was only supported by a few games which were later Super CD games. As such, it's not really worth getting it repaired.

There is not much mention of it on the 'net.
