I have a UK edition 3DO (220 volt) and I'm wondering if I'll need a step down converter for it to run on US voltage, or if I'll be able to get by with just the adapter. Has anyone ever tried to run one on half voltage?

I second that, you'll need a step-up converter to run a UK 3DO in the US. The power supply is built-in, but it's not like a computer or monitor where it can switch voltages.
I use this one for most UK machines - great cost, high quality:

VT 1P 300 UK
Thanks guys!
Regardless of what kind of converter that you get, my personal preference is for big, bulky converters that have actual transformers, not the little light switch-type converters. I've seen one to many of the switchers smoke out for no good reason.
On that page, it looks like any converter listed as step up/down is transformer based.
i use the vt200 in my setup and it works fine. cept its white
