Default What do you like in Genesis games?

    1 Castlevania Bloodlines
    2. Shinobi III
    3. Mega Turrican
    4 Gunstar Heroes
    5. Hyperstone Heist
    6. Contra Hard Corps.
    7. Super Street Fighter 2
    8. Streets of Rage 2
    9. Strider's return
    10. Rocket Knight Adventures

Is my top 10, I know my topic about not getting into Genesis games states that I don't like them becase of their large sprites but I don't think this is the case mainly because I like Rocket Knight Adventures. I bought Comix Zone to see if i would like it as well and I am currently waiting for it to come in the mail. So list what you look for in Genesis games and help me out by pointing out some similarities in my top 10 so i can find some Genesis games I truely like.

growing up I hated the Genesis, the music and colors in almost every game always made me feel terrible

the only game I can really stand is Sonic 2

I'll probably use this thread to find something to try out

It's always so bizarre to me when I read gamers who say that. It's hard for me to wrap my head around how a non-fanboy can actually feel that way about the majority of the Genesis library. Especially when they had no such complaints from NES games. BTW, I NOT saying that it's a fanboy statement -- it's just weird to me when people who aren't fanboys really feel/felt that way.

I thought that most of the music in Genesis games was fantastic.

This thread is more supposed to help me find out what I like in Genesis games. I know the top 50 thread exists, I made this thread because I can't put into words what I like about certain Genesis games and I was hoping you people can help me find it.

Comix Zone is an amazing game, but it's also incredibly hard! You've been warned...

Since you seem to enjoy shooters/platformers, have you tried out Batman & Robin? It's a platformer that plays like a side-scrolling shooter and you can play 2-player cooperatively! It also has some of the most amazing graphics and music from the 16-bit era. In fact, it would probably put some PS1 side-scrollers to shame...it looks that good! But, it's also very difficult...at least initially.

I think that you would also like Alien Soldier...but just purchase a repro of it unless you enjoy buying $200 Genesis games.

Sega has always had a focus on arcade gaming. I'm not only talking about ports of arcade games. I'm talking about the special type of gameplay experience you'd normally find in arcade titles. That experience was brought to many exclusive titles for the system. There are obviously exceptions to this rule (such as sports and RPG titles), but I'm willing to bet that will explain what you feel is different about Sega games.

And this is also true of the Sega Master System, Sega Saturn and Sega Dreamcast. The four major home consoles all had that focus. The Genesis 6-button and Saturn controllers seem to get a lot of praise for their arcade style button layout too.

The Saturn controller is still my favorite gamepad to this day. The licensed USB pads are awesome for emulators AND playing fighting games on the PS3

Urzu, I feel the same way about you about Genesis. Growing up on other systems such as NES and SNES, Genesis is really hard to get into. The FM music makes everything sound like a low bitrate techno remix of what it's supposed to be. Graphics are really dark compared to SNES.

That said, you probably just need a breakthrough game. In other words, one killer app to break you into the system, having good gameplay that makes you forget about all of the system flaws. By the time you finish the game, you're used to the unique style of the games.

I Like Mystic Defender, though that fire weapon is a real pain in the ass to use.

I think Game Genies work as region converters. but you may need to enter some codes if the game has lock-out which I am not sure if Phantasy Star IV has.

For the SNES I tend to like RPGs and Top down adventure games like Zelda. But on the Genesis I tend to like side-side scrolling platforming/run and gun or hack n slash type games. So the types of games I like on both consoles are different. I do like side scrollers on the SNES but they aren't my main focus.

Sorry to bump my old thread and posting multiple times in a row. But I got Dinosaurs for Hire and I Like it, I also played some of the games on the 6-Pak that I have and I like Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, and Revenge of Shinobi on it. This is weird because before I was dead certain that I hated Golden Axe. Also are there any differences between the 6-Pak and the original games gameplay wise? Also will I like Golden Axe 2?

I love my Genesis. Technically, I didn't grow up with a Genesis (Got one in fifth grade, so I guess I kinda did...), but I still love the console.

    My favorite games are:

    Rocket Knight Adventures
    Golden Axe
    Mercs
Contra: Hard Corps (It's frustratingly hard, though)
    Vectorman
    Street Fighter II: Champion Edition

Also, there shouldn't be any difference between the 6-Pak games and the regular ones.

the only differences i can think of would be in Revenge of Shinobi.
i'm pretty sure it's all just graphical stuff, but a couple bosses change in some versions, ex: spider-man is a boss in one version.

Just got Rolling Thunder 2, my only gripe with it is that you die from getting shot once! Sure its like real life, but this is a game, a side scrolling game no less. You should not even have that health bar if getting shot once kills you!

If you like Mystic Defender then Jewel Master is going to be right up your alley.

You can't really play RT2 like a 'regular' side-scroller, though. It's methodically-paced; you're constantly ducking behind crates and doors to avoid gunfire and waiting for your opportunity to attack. The limited ammo supply only drives this mechanic further.

It's a great game once you get used to it, and playing through the game with a friend makes it even better. Especially when you come up with new ways to cover each others' back while making your way through the levels! Too bad they dropped the 2-player support with the third game.
