The INTV version had the best control and graphics, but the frigging Intellivision controller itself is what sucks donkey. I never could stand that stupid disc. That's why I usually play the 2600 version, even though it's technically inferior.
In general the Atari 8-bit version is considered best (from what I hear; haven't played that one), followed closely by the original 2600 version. The C64 and Colecovision versions are pretty disappointing, and the Intellivision version is pretty awful (changing the controls to use two different buttons for no reason). I haven't played it on 5200, but I imagine it's a good port but bogged down by the controller.
Pitfall 1 - 2600 (it may be graphically inferior, but the 2600 had the best controller at the time, so it wins by a hair. Never played the Atari 400/800 version. The Coleco, Inty, and 5200 versions were hampered by their shitty controllers.)
Pitfall 2 - Atari 400/800 (the music sounds a bit better on Atari's computers...)
I had no idea the other versions were so different. This page was a revelation:

The 2600 version seems really nice on the Microsoft Game Room service. I'm not sure how accurate it is, but it's neat to see it on my HDTV.
Well, Atari 8-bit and Atari 5200 use nearly identical hardware. It makes sense that the versions would be similar. That one and the MSX one look the best. Intellivision one looks like it was designed by The Grinch.

8-bit version gets my vote. 5200 is practically the same just with an arse controller
^^This. I've always thought that the 8-bit/5200 version was the best-looking myself. And the 8-bit/5200 also has the definitive version of Pitfall II with the second quest (the Adventurer's Edition).
You also might want to give Bottomless Pitfall a try!

I'd say 8-bit, although 2600 isn't far behind. 5200 controller ruins it, jumping with squishing buttons. CV control stinks, INTV is worse. MSX doesn't count, in my book, not a N.A. release.

Pitfall the lost caverns for the atari 2600 is the best pitfall game ever! The graphics and music are stunning!
Which actually looks pretty close to the Colecovision and MSX counterparts:

C64 version has this unnecessary footstep sound effect; it's kinda irritating. Other than that, I'd go 2600 for Pitfall 1. Obviously, 5200 has the Adventure mode, and I've got Wico 5200 sticks, so I'm good with that. But if the C64 had the adventure mode.....

Not Super Pitfall! for sure.
i have to go with the vcs original. there may be better looking versions, but none of them play any better, they simply tweaked david cranes original vcs design.
Pitfall 2 for the Atari 5200 was my favorite game for a long part of my young life, until I got my hands on Zelda for the NES.
Pitfall is on the SNES as well...you have to put a code in but I'd be more likely to play that way.
Also, Pitfall II in MAME isn't too bad either.
