Remote play - PS3 cannot detect PSP

I'm trying to set up remote play between my psp and ps3.

My ps3 and psp are both up to date on firmware.

I've got the psp connected via USB and the pictures, music and video portions of the ps3 see it as a USB device. The remote play function simple says that there is no psp connected.

any ideas?

If you don't have a wireless router, you should be able to configure it as a Blu-ray device. It's been a while since I configured a PSP for remote play and I can't recall off the top of my head.

With older versions of the firmware (like the link featured in this thread) it was a very convoluted process ...

... now it's very easy, just a few quick steps.

I did this a while ago so I can't remember what exactly to do. But I remember I was having some trouble. I had to mess with the PSPs network settings quite a bit I believe.

I've got the PSP plugged in using USB. The PSP screen shows "USB Connection" and the PS3 can obviously detect it because it sees it as a usb device on the picture/music tabs. It just can't see it in the remote play section.

edit: I should add, this is an original fat PSP (1st gen). Does that matter?

No difference. PSP 1000 can connect via remote play.

Did you check out the walk-through video in my 1st response?

You may need to back out of USB Mode (circle button) while it's connected via USB to get to the remote play option on the PS3.

Remote play is pretty damned neat when you connect to your system via a Wi-Fi spot when away from home ... the only down side is that you have to leave your PS3 on or in "sleep" mode, which still keeps it in a low-usage mode.

Little known fact - you can play ANY PS1 game disc sitting in your drive while in remote play ... though even with lag set low it's still pretty laggy, so it's best used for turn-based games or RPGs that don't require real-time actions.

Hey, actually I didn't really get any time to put into this until this morning. I think my PSP must be haunted as it still doesn't work.

Here you can see that the PS3 and PSP are set to use the same SSID, but the PS3 doesn't seem to be broadcasting (the PS3 was parked at the remoteplay screen).



I thought this might be due to the fact that my PS3 was still connected to my wireless internet connection. I mean, makes sense right? How can one network adapter be connected to both my wireless internet AND simultaneously be broadcasting to the PSP?

Unfortunately, I couldn't test this because I can't find on the PS3 how to disconnect the network adapter from a particular network. I could turn the disable the internet, which wouldn't help, or I could delete the settings for my wireless network, which I really don't want to do because that would be a pain.


Out of desperation, I tried the USB connection method again - doesn't work. Like I said, I think the PSP is haunted.



Has anyone else run into this? It's almost like the PS3 sees the PSP's memory card as a usb device, but just doesn't detect the PSP itself.

edit: I just realized - at one point this PSP was modded with custom firmware. I never used any of the features and then later installed original firmware off of a game disc. I wonder if something was screwed up in this process. I've ordered a pandoras battery, will reinstall CFW, see if I can get it to work/fix something and then go back to original firmware.

Hmmm ... custom firmware may have done something to screw up the way the PSP updated/the way the PS3 sees it.

See if you can restore it and install the latest firmware.

Well, once everything is all synced between PSP and PS3 (which looks like your problem at the moment) ... If I'm in my house I typically select my home network to connect to the PS3.

Usually the option is there to connect via the PS3 directly (I think that's called "private network") or via whatever wireless network is in the area. But they do need to be synced for the process to work.

I just went through the steps on my PS3.

• Plug the PSP in via USB, put it in USB mode.
  
• Go to the Remote Play Options section of the XMB (far right).
  
• Select Register Device, select PSP, the system will reigster your PSP (once you get your issue cleared up).
  
• Then select Remote Play on your PS3.
  
• Then select Remote Play on PSP.
  
• When prompted Connect Via Internet (not private network) and select your wireless home network (which your PSP should already have set up ... if not select new network find it and log in) ... you'll be prompted to log in to your PSN Network Account and can set it to save your email/password for future logins.

That should be it. I just remote play logged in (noticed that they added a level 4 setting to the control delay ... now it's really really close to perfect in terms of no lag if you don't mind the screen resolution being low) and played some Pixel Junk Shooter.

Have you tried "restoring default settings" on your PSP? That may help. Worth a shot.

hey guys, a bit of an update:

I received my pandora battery and have installed custom firmware (latest version). I've fussed around with a few different options and still have no luck. For those familiar with CFW, I've been trying to cycle through various usb modes under the VSH menu (memory stick/UMD/flash 0-4) and have still had no luck.

When I plug it into the PS3, it is visible under the tabs for pictures, movies and music. It is mounted as "USB Device ()". When I try to register it under remote play, it simply says that there are no PSPs attached.

I've done extensive web searching and have still not found a solution, but I have found a host of others with the same issue. Lots of people with the problem, no answers

I may end up trading my modded PSP-1001 locally to someone else with an unmodded one. I'm sure I could do that pretty easily, but the problem is that I've had this one for years and really like it.

I've also tried to register the device wirelessly, but I get the impression that this simply isn't possible with current firmware.

Frankie, when you plug in your PSP using USB, does it mount as "USB Device ()" or something different?

I got a second PSP last night (a psp 3000). I connected using remote play no problem.

My 3000 will be my regular psp and my 1000 will be my homebrew.

So... I'm pretty excited to have this working, but I've got no idea what to do with it!

Can I use it to play games?

Yes you can.

Any PS1 game on the HDD, any PS1 disc in the disc drive, and SOME PS3 and PSN games (I'm sure there's a list out there that you can find).

However, even on the best connection with the highest responsiveness set, you're going to get a noticable input delay, so any game that requires 1:1 lag-free control is going to be a bit frustrating.

Good for RPGs or any other game that isn't dependent on having lag-free play.

It's an interesting novelty, and a cool way to stream music and/or movies through the PSP. If you have your PS3 set up as a media server that's a very cool way to access that stuff on the go.

You can also access things like the Store, the Web Browser (yes, redundant, BUT the PS3's web browser is much more robust than the PSPs) and your friend list off of your PS3.
