My question is: are xbox Ninja Gaiden Black and Ninja Gaiden Sigma virtually the same game? Any differences? Thanks.

I think that Sigma has some additional content i.e. the Rachel missions that Black didn't have. Also it doesn't have the unlockable arcade NG which Black does.

I played Ninja Gaiden for xbox and I have Sigma for ps3. I bought this after I beat the first one thinking it was a different game but was wrong. Well anyway I only played through the first level but the changes were minimal and I also thought that Sigma was easier than the xbox one making less for that feeling of accomplishment. Graphically I didn't think it was super noticeable but was better on the ps3. I would recommend the original xbox game.
