Military Madness sold me on the TG16 back in the early 90's. I remember playing a demo of Bonk at Target and thinking "god this sucks compared to Altered Beast." but a friend got one for $99 a year or so later and had this game.. many many a night we played Military Madness until 4:00am.

I might stand alone on this, but I don't really care for the first Legendary Axe. It may have been impressive for its day, but the game just feels slow and chunky now, and aside from the huge final boss, the designs are rather bland. The first stage has a duo of ordinary-looking bears for a boss, and the end of level two pits you against a rock --a rock!

If you decide to replace the original LA, I'd suggest one of the following:

Bonk's Adventure: It was never quite the system showcase that NEC needed, but Bonk is still a solid, enjoyable platformer, and, in some ways, better than its sequel.

R-Type: Aside from some flicker problems, it's an extremely fun and accurate translation.

Soldier Blade: An excellent shooter in the Star Soldier vein, this one has a superb power-up system and some great bosses.

Air Zonk: I just picked this game up not too long ago. Not the most indepth shooter, but there's a cheerful and playful look to the characters which is undeniably smile provoking...not to mention some of the more wackier power ups i've seen in a shooter. Pretty choice all around, with the only drawback being Zonk's somewhat clunky control.

Blazing Lazers: One of the top 10 TG16 shmups. Nuff said.

Bonks Revenge: The pinnacle of the series. Everything was a leap forward over the original EXCEPT for the removal of the head spin!!!

Devil's Crush: One of the most addictive games i've ever played. Cool hybrid of pinball and a shmup.

Legendary Axe: This game was coool 10 yrs ago, but upon revisting, drips in sucktitude. Stiiff controls and animation + suspect graphics. Boo.

Legendary Axe 1 and 2? Neutopia? Time Cruise? Tennis? Hell no! Now granted, I count the Duo (with all it's CD glory as well) and the import stuff too, but there are a lot better games out there than those. I played Magical Chase a while back too and I thought it was SHIT. Certainly not worth the $100+ it goes for. My list would look more like:

    Kunio Dodgeball (import)
    Soldier Blade
    Air Zonk
    Bonk's Adventure
    Military Madness
    Silent Debuggers
    Download (import)
    Image Fight (import)
    Dungeon Explorer
    Sidearms
    Devil's Crush
    Parasol Stars
    Cadash
    Final Lap Twin
    Final Soldier
    Super Star Soldier
    Gunhed
    Ninja Gaiden (import)
    Parodius Da! (import)
    Splatterhouse

I remember playing the Turbo at a Haunted house event in a Suburb of chicago and saying wow this is great I have to have this.
I got to play great games like Splatter House ,Lengendary Axe, Keith courage, plus of course everyone's favorite giant head hero Bonk.
Well About a weel later I ventured off and got it with the add on CD player which at the time was a bit expensive but I had Y's and last alert and nothing else in the world mattered to me at the time. Remembering being the only One on the block to have this system I used to have boatloads of Friends come over to play it and Y's was always our Favorite game, that was untill China Warrior and Vigilante came home. All in all I can Say I had some great memories and it helped me make many friends to which this day I still have. I have now become an Nec loyalist and I now collect so many Import games for the pc engine due to this. It's great to see how some of the games were altered a bit from thier release here in the USA.
Take example Splatterhouse which in the USA version you dont get to see the Cross of Christ when you reach the last level. In JJ AND JEFF there are so many antics that you dont see. In the japanese version there is constant Farting and what not. Truly Great Stuff.

    Thanks

    Hi,

I'm in the UK and TG 16 stuff isn't very common here...I could really do with some more cards, but of the few I've got I really like Cratermaze. It just seems like a fun game to play.

I also seem to get hypnotised by Pac-land, though I dont know if the TG 16 version is a good one.

Everybody seems to want Jap PC engine stuff rather than TG 16.

Is it just a coincidence that there are no CD games mentioned in that list? If yes, I understand you are talking about card-only games. But if no, I certainly can't see why Ys: Book I and II could not be in the top 25, when it is clearly THE best TG game ever.

I personally like Air Zonk, Parasol Stars (Already listed), and Pac-land, if that helps any.

What would you guys reccomend as a great RPG? I'm looking for a deep story (preferably dark) and magic. Any suggestions?

It's been a year and a half since I said it, and I'll say it again: WHY IS YS: BOOK I AND II NOT ON THAT LIST?!? Sorry to yell, but I've been playing video games since 1979, have been on a TV show (TV Pixxx), edited a fanzine (Zap!), hold a world record (Monster Lair), and played 1,000's of video games, and that game is still my favorite video game off all-time, and always will be. It deserves much more credit then it gets.

I like most of the original list but I would take Splatterhouse off, it's decent but I don't know if it's a top 20, I would consider replacing it with Power Golf. The game has old graphics but the gameplay is fantastic.
If they made a movie out of your top five worst sins, what would it be rated?

So long as Blazing Lasers and Bonk's Adventure make the list I won't complain. I would also really like to see Alien Crush make the list as it is one of my very favorite games.
