Well it was Lost Level's that released it so I believe it's pretty legit. You can download the FDS file from them and play it yourself if your skeptical. I think there was a thread over in the prototype boards about this already.
This has already been posted about in the actual "Prototypes" subforum.
And as someone who actually remembers seeing the original Yahoo Japan Auction the White Disk was sold in (unfortunately I didn't have near the amount of money to be the lucky guy who purchased it - I eventually learned afterwards from drx of Hidden Palace that it was "In good hands". The eventual releasors, I believe.), I will vouch for this Disk Image's integrity.
This ain't anything like that old "Zelda 3 NES" Hoax BS From years ago. There's a released disk image for download, perfectly playable on emulators (and probably hardware, if I had FDS Disk copying tools) and a documentation of every difference between the prototype disc contents and the final disc contents. All the differences seem logical and reasonable (although in some cases a tad boring - there's nothing quite like a Sonic 2 Hidden Palace Zone in this proto), and do not contradict anything that's been previously known about Zelda's development process or older, previous "Prototype" image leaks, except for the few things that are more similar to the final game (we don't have the "Sword or Boomerang" prototype just yet, unfortunately.).
Lol, oh god. I remember that moron. That guy would swear up and down that he had it and all people did on his forum was make fun of him. For the life of me, I wish I could remember what the name of that site was, just so I can go there and make fun of him again.
And yes, as said before, very legit. DreamTR also has a Zelda 1 prototype in NES cart form but I can't remember if that one had as many differences as this FDS version.

I know that the section is way at the bottom of the board, but this was posted several days ago:

Why is it that when a big prototype release comes out, people automatically question its veracity? Do you really think a veteran group like Lost Levels is going to release something that is fake?
<Evan_G> i keep my games in an inaccessable crate where i can't play them
