Angry Dreamcast - Definitely Downright Dirty

I bought a Dreamcast, controllers, games, memory/tremor packs from a buddy for $20. Thought I got a great deal, until I looked inside..

    and outside...

(Not pictured: brown gunk all over the sides, inside controller ports, and essentially every nook and cranny.

Armed with rubbing alcohol, a toothbrush, paper towels, and a large box of cue-tips, I set to work...

...and ended up with a pile of.. something gross

about an hour later, the finished product (a few missed spots.. I think I need a stiffer-bristled toothbrush):

    Now.. to tackle the controllers

I had an SNES in a very similar condition. It was like someone turned it over and spilled coffee on it.

Though I can't really complain since it was free.

Eww...makes me believe he used it as a toilet.

I hope you cleaned your hands with alcohol and whatever disinfectant you have!

I actually did send him a text reading, "who pooped in your Dreamcast?"

Does it work now? A little too late but if the plasctic pieces come off well enough I would have probably stuck them in the dishwasher.

Believe it or not, it worked even before I cleaned it. Additionally, you have a dishwasher? Can I bring my sink over to your place to get some dishes done?

this is how i clean my consoles take the top half off and wash it with antibacterial spray
plus you will need to take off all the metal parts and bam put the whole top part with the water warm and then use the spray and gives nice clean and i do this with model one genesis and other systems its safe but just make sure the parts are dry before puting the caseing back.

Should definitely take it apart, whatever that brown crap was could have gotten all over the circuit board.

Oh man that's disgusting lol. I think the solution will be to take apart the Dreamcast and give the case a nice scrub down. If any of that gunk got on the circuit board take some q-tips to it with a bit of alchohol.

While rubbing alcohol is good, for external cleaning of plastic I prefer a "scrubbing bubbles" type foaming cleanser to break up any caked-on crap, and then a quick rub with plastic polish/restorer or (since that's a specialty product) pledge wood polish (also works great on plastic, leather and stainless steel)

Armed with one of those tooth-brushes and some foaming cleanser you should be able to break up what's left of that apple juice no problem.

The first picture is a metaphor for how the Dreamcast was treated by the gaming public.
