Default N64 pack removal without key

Can I remove the jumper pack and put the expansion pack in without the key?
I have not bothered to look at it or try yet but is it possible/bad idea?

Yeah, I just use the corner of the slot cover to pop it out.

Of course. Use whatever works, but a lot of people use a butter knife.

Wait a second! There's a specific tool to do this? I never knew.

Yes. The Expansion Pak originally shipped with a little plastic thing that looked kind of like a shoehorn, officially called the "Jumper Pak Ejector Tool". It's nice to have, but it's not necessary to remove a Jumper Pak or Expansion Pak; a flathead screwdriver can do the same thing

A dime works. The cover piece is the better option.

I remember having that tool when I bought the DK64 system bundle. Why the expansion pack wasn't just installed at the factory is beyond me.

How many people bought that system and didn't install it?

In other words, why pay a line worker to do something that someone else will do and pay you for? Even if the difference is $1 in cost, every time one is sold that's $2 in your pocket. But then they made this widget when you could just use the lid... They were an enigma back then!

The jumper pack and expansion pack are pretty much physically identical, so I don't see why it would have to add any significant cost to the system for that bundle just to substitute the expansion pack for the jumper pack.

Hard to believe that would've cost more than what they ended up paying for jumper packs and removal tools that would've pretty much all been removed while hooking up the console and never used again.

Just toss the smaller box, with the stuff already in it, into the new bigger box.

So there are games you can't fully play with the expansion pak? Lately, I'm learning more than I ever wanted to know about the weirdness that is N64. It is the 90's 5200.

I misread your post and edited mine as you were replying. I think it's a valid point to raise since it doesn't make much sense.

Space Station Silicon Valley can't be finished (At least with North American copies) with the expansion pack installed. You'll occasionally see someone claim otherwise since the game appears to run just fine initially, but there's never been any evidence they did a second run that fixed the bug that makes it crash with the ram expansion installed.

But I doubt Nintendo had that in mind when they released a system bundle that included both the jumper pack and expansion pack. Would've been cheaper just to allow tech support to send out a jumper pack on the off chance someone bought that DK64 bundle and Space Station Silicon Valley and got far enough into the game where they couldn't progress.

Was the DK64 bundle released in Japan? I would bet not. It's possible the set could have been assembled in the US for all we know, after they gathered its individual pieces, and they'd probably rather leave the jumper paks in than waste money on the man power to pull them all out and replace. Wherever the N64 was being manufactured at the time, Japan or China I'm guessing, it could've been impossible or a big hassle to get them to not produce the normal jumper pak model like usual. Who knows, maybe expansion paks were made in an entirely different location altogether.

The console was molded in transluscent green plastic. They were manufactured from the start with the intention of being used just in that console bundle.
